If i wanted to back up some important emails, and I transferred them to a new mailbox I created "On my mac" where exactly are they going on my mac? Are they being saved in a folder I can view?

The folders within the mail folder in mail labeled, "On My Mac", are really a misnomer.

What they should say is only on your mac. All the mail that is in the folders in the Mail app are kept in a proprietary format compressed within the mail folder in your user/library folder.

What Apple is trying to say is that you have removed the mail from the standard set of mailboxes and thus the mail server will now delete it from the similar folders on the server.

I hope this makes sense.
