I am looking to write a custom SMS application that will add features that the current messages application does not provide. How do you go about replacing the old messages application so when you send and receive texts that it will go to your new application instead of the old one.

I wish apple would have a settings feature that would let you hide or disable applications in the original OS that you don't want to see or use. the contacts icon is the most annoying thing ever

You don't...it's not possible with the official SDK.

but what about all the SMS applications in the store right now? all the free ones etc.... how does someone text you to that one so your texts are free?

ok but that's not that im saying...

for instance, let's say you don't have a text messaging plan and you want to text using the free texting apps....

when someone sends a text to xxx-xxx-xxxx so that you will get it, how does the free app know to pick it up instead of the apple sms application so you don't get charged for texts...

I don't understand how the free text apps work when someone would send you a text and at&t would charge u for it neways...

after I understand all that, so there is not way to create a NEW SMS application that adds features that I know people would be interested in having?

Those apps don't hijack the existing Messages app, they circumvent it. For example, with Textfree Unlimited, you don't message to your phone's number, you have to text to username@textfree.us

:( oh well i guess I just wont have my idea come to fruition then lol...
