I would like to create an encrypted Disk Image and store them on my USB flash drive and maybe back them up on the cloud.

My physical USB flash drive is formatted to exfat because sometimes I need to use it on Windows machines for other documents and apps that are stored there.

My question is, should I format the Disk Image itself as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS?

As for the Disk Image, I will be using that only on the MacOS.

Yes. Either format. I suspect there is a bit more overhead with APFS. So for a small image Mac OS Extended (Journaled) might be best.

Next question.

Suppose I need to upload the encrypted DMG image to either one drive or iCloud and in case I would not be able to get a hold of my MacBook Pro running MacOS, will i be able to download and then mount the DMG disk image on my iPhone?

If this doesn’t work, I’ll just have to resort to encrypting each file itself without the Disk image option. I need something that is universal that would work on both MacOS and iOS.

DMG’s not gonna do any good on iOS.
