I'm looking for an app that will help me design my house, at a very basic level. I'm in the first steps of planning my new house, so I need some software (preferably freeware or inexpensive shareware), that will help me with that. I just want to play with some ideas on how to do the layout before talking to the architect.

The closest I've seen is ConceptDraw, but it is overkill and a bit pricey for me. Any ideas??

Thanks!! :D

are you looking for something to get absolutely precise measurements or something just to map out your ideas? if it's the latter, it'd recomment sketchup. it's very easy to use but it has some advanced features. i've been using it to make a model of my house for this school project we're doing and i've been having a very easy time.

You could try Omnigraffle. It can do floorplans and even has templates to let you drop in sofas, tables, bathrooms etc

It comes included with some Macs so check in your Apps folder. If not you can download it from here; the bathroom plugins are here too

It's reasonably priced; and they have a really good try before buy system so you can try out a fully featured version with a daily license (it won't expire until you quit the app)

I'm looking for something to map out some ideas I have.

I do have OmniGraffle in my PB, but it doesn't appear to have the set of shapes I need... the closest I could find are the office layout shapes plus the bathroom shapes mentioned in the thread. I'll keep looking foir other shapes, but does anyone know where I could find shapes for sofas, tables, beds, kitchens, etc?

I'll also check out sketchup.

Thanks!!!

um, if you are going to use an architect, why are you trying to design your house yourself??? that's what their years of training and professional experience are all about after all.

seriously, either go talk to the architect and dont bother with this "design it yourself stuff", or forget the architect altogether if you want to do it yourself......everyone will be happier this way
