Was wondering what the best software was on OSX to pull video from a DVD to create an MPG file. A family member has sent me a DVD they created from an old video tape, and I need to get a chunk of it as an MPG so I can put it on another DVD for a Christmas present.

HandBrake does a good job. It encodes DVDs as MP4 or AVI.

(This one has an archive with a tutorial that includes the software you need (you might also need QTPro though))

Also, a quick search on Google using "DVD ripping tutorial Mac OS X" will turn up some other hits.

Edit: Handbrake looks like it's easier to use, unless you need more control over how things are converted - then one of the tutorials might be better.
