Thinking about it, it seems as if a music creation application would not be that difficult to make on the iPhone/iPod touch. Here's how I think it could work:

Portrait mode -

The tab menus at the top (or bottom), like the ones in the app store (such as "top free" and "top paid." Basically the button that switches to a different screen) could be for different sections like "Rests" and "Notes" and "Accidentals," et cetera...you choose one of the categories, then click on what you want to input (such as an eighth note).

Landscape mode -

Would be the staff itself. After choosing your input from the portrait mode screens, you could simply put your finger somewhere, and drag it up and down, letting go where you want the note to be (such as an A). Since landscape mode is pretty big, I don't think it'd be too hard to have a decent sized staff (so that input with the fingers isn't that daunting).

Editing shouldn't be that difficult, assuming the staff is decently sized. Simply choose an eraser tool of some kind, or choose a grabber tool, touch a note, and drag it. Does that make any sense?

Anyways, if I had an app like that, I would be ridiculously happy. I'd pay $15-30 (atleast) for an app like that. I'm sure you creative developers can think of some other features, but even a "barebones" application like that would be infinitely useful for me.

Edit: Here are some ridiculously good drawings of kind of what I mean:

Question: How much would you be willing to pay for an app like this?

To be honest, since I am a musician who loves having stuff like this with him everywhere (thus why I don't travel without my laptop and my instruments, when possible), I would be willing to pay quite a bit for an app like this. As a student, it's hard to justify the purchase of anything really expensive unless it's a necessity, but if it was around Christmastime, or even if the app just looked really good (since I do have a job and can pay for stuff if I want it), I'd be willing to spend $20-50, depending on how much it actually did. To have basic music creation (with the ability to choose key, staff [treble, bass, or grand], name, et cetera) and the ability to input notes and stuff for an instrument, I'd probably pay like $20-25. If it supported more than just like a piano, and I'd probably pay more. I don't know, it's hard to say without actually knowing the features/ease-of-use. People tend to be stingy and cheap, so if you made the app expensive, people will bitch, but since I understand the hard work that goes into this, and the use of the app for myself, I would be willing to pay a good deal. After all, Finale isn't worth the ridiculous amount they charge for it, but I bought that anyways...

I hope that helped

Depends on how many features it had. Fairly simple? $2-3. Many features? Possibly $10 or so. You will probably get more buyers if you keep it fairly cheap.
