I get this error message:

"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.

Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."

Does it really mean I have to partition my whole hard drive and then reinstall everything? I'm hoping I'm just misinterpreting....

I have had my uMBP for about two weeks, I boot camped, decided I needed more space for windows, used Winclone to clone my windows partition, merged the windows partition back into OS X, and now I get an error message when I try to repartition. Please tell me there is an easy fix. BTW, my harddrive is 250GB, there is 87GB free, and I am only trying to create an 81GB partition.

Sorry to disappoint, but this gets asked a lot
The best way to fix is to backup your drive, erase it, restore and then Boot Camp

You should have a backup strategy anyway, and this is a good excuse to get one

You can try iDefrag, but the issue isn't really defragmentation, it is contiguous free space
Most who try it, end up doing as I stated above

Hmmm, that's disappointing... Well, I have probably 100GB of files I could delete. Would that help anything?

If not, what is the preferred method for backing up and restoring?

@upinflames900: Yeah, I sort of posted about it, but I was trying to create two Mac partitions in the other thread (using disk utility). Now I am trying the boot camp assistant (again) and posting specifically about it.

Deleting files may or may not help
The issue is contiguous space

You can either use Time Machine or clone your drive

To clone your internal HD, Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) or SuperDuper (SD) can do this for you.

You can also use Disk Utilities restore function

Ok gotcha...backup using time machine then reinstall Leopard from time machine...I think that should do the trick with the least amount of effort.

One last question (hopefully): Do you image the entire drive including OS X files? If so, how do you go about restoring? Won't you need OS X to restore?

If you use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper you can make a bootable clone and boot from that and restore

Yes, if you clone, you will want to clone the whole drive and restore the whole drive

There are really multiple ways you can do this
You could install Leopard and use Migration Assistant too
Many different combinations

I deleted all my junk movies, which were taking up about 80GB, thanks to awesome HD quality :D

Anyways, I tried bootcamp partitioning again, and it WORKED!!!

Should I just restore my bootcamp clone? Or would it be better to still do the format and restore?

If you have a BootCamp clone, you can just restore it
