Creating space on a 128GB MBA

Hi everyone,

Just got a new macbook air with 128GB HD running Yosemite. Very pleased with it.

Because 128GB isn't a whole lot I want to free up some space and thought of deleting Garageband, iPhoto & iMovie because I don't use these and they seem to take up a bunch of GB's.

I can't figure out what's the best approach in doing this? I believe they are part of a "package" installed through the app store?

Any other things that are worth deleting to free up space?

First of all, I hope you got the 13" - if so, you have another source of storage: the SD card slot. Amazon has this great SD card which fits flush against the edge of the slot: 128GB for $80.

Secondly, I'd do a clean install of 10.10 from a thumb drive, then reinstall only the apps you use (and delete the 5GB installer for Yosemite after you make the installer). Everything should be in the "Purchased" category in the App Store.

Lastly, if you want to uninstall an app, use AppCleaner. It removes related library folders and files too:

Already got it installed on a thumb drive so that will be a breeze.

So once you have the whole drive erased and you install Yosemite from scratch there is an option for Garageband etc to install or not? I thought it was part of Yosemite as a package?

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Certainly going to do a fresh install now

Zen,

It was part of iLife, but if you've downloaded it or updated it via the App Store in the past, it will be part of your "Purchased" library (in the App Store app). Should allow you to re-download it if you need it.

check out the niftydrive; it's a holder for the sd slot, lies flat with my macbook pro. got a 64GB samsung card for it.

try monolingual, to remove foreign language files (the latest versions supports 10.10).

you could remove the voices files in the system (if you don't use them), and any garageband support files in the HD>Library folder (if you don't use that).

back things up, proceed carefully (always)...
