Creation of custom apps for a select few?

A few of us at work in my department have iPhones and the other day I thought of acustomized app we all could use but no one else on the planet could use. So obviously it would be something Apple would never consider for the App Store.

When you develop an app to eventually submit to Apple, can you load it on your phone etc to test it out? If so, that's what I am thinking. Develop the app to our likings and just load it on our respective iPhones.

Is that doable?

Yep, you can do that through Ad Hoc distribution, or just installing a test build on the device through X-Code. You'll have to pay $99/year to join the iPhone developer program.
