Maybe I'm the minority here, but I just couldn't pull the trigger on the device quite yet.

I think its a great device but as I seriously thought of my needs and uses, the iPad failed to address them. surfing at home - I can do that on my iPhone or Laptop. Watching a movie - I have a TV for that. Useful device for traveling, absolutely but I have little to no travel plans in the immediate future.

The 800 dollars I'd end up spending can be better used to buy a Mac mini for my children.

Here's the rub, how many people will go through similar though processes and pass on the iPad at least initially. May be I'll change my mind in the near future, especially when I go and play with one at the apple store (once they arrive at the apple store)

I'm having a hard time spending 800 dollars on a device that will allow me to read a book or watch a movie. Now granted, I could opt for the wifi one and save lots of $$ but the logic remains. Plus the eBooks seem to be more expensive then the real thing, at least in what I've seen so far.

I have no problem ordering since I paid 500$ for my Kindle DX and sold that as soon as I found out about iPad for about 430$. So ordering iPad for 500$ was a no-brainer for me.

800$ for you makes no sense, you have absolutely no use for it. Save it at least for G2 iPad or drop down to 500$.

I was having a hard time leading up to pre-orders to get myself the 3g version.

However, i have a Treo on Verizon with no data - and it's out of contract. I planned on getting a Verizon iPhone if they came out this summer. But then i realized, i'm out of contract on my phone, don't HAVE to have data because my contract is from 2008, and i'm unsure of my financial circumstances in the next year (nasty on-going divorce).

I had the money NOW for the iPad, and frankly, it does everything i'd need data for on the iPhone - but then fills in a whole HUGE list of OTHER things that it will work awesome for.... at a pay as you go $15/mo for data. Win win!

So financially, it makes more sense to do this for me. My out and about data needs aren't huge - but when i need it, i need it. I'll keep my eyes open for a cheap dumb phone from Verizon and pick that up to stay out of contract and "cheap", use my Touch as my Portable Brain/PDA, and the iPad as my file box.

You are not the only one. Although iPad looks nice and has amazing screen, it's just overeaten iPod Touch. I'm saving my money towards MacBook (Pro) because I find much more use for it than I would for iPad.

I'm waiting for iPads to arrive at the stores and then go play with one and if I think that it can replace a laptop, I'm gonna get one but so far, I'm not impressed. I also want to hear how it is from people who actually have it.

I guess waiting for rev B may be worth it

I didn't even wake up early to bother pre ordering, and I am going to buy one. I have a few questions yet that need to be answered before I make a decision as to "which one" so I'll wait till they end up in stores. I've waited for years for a good "tablet" type of device, 3 more weeks isn't gonna matter. Not to mention if they are sold out, that will be a sign to wait for the 3g model anyhow. :)

Plus the fact if I do decide to wait in line... you get a free Tshirt! lol

I ordered with the basis if I end up not liking it I can resell it on eBay and get most of my return back.

I ordered the 32GB Wi-Fi model.

I reserved one at the store AND pre-ordered a 3G. That give me a few days to REALLY think about it. And in both cases if I am going to pull this trigger, I might as well go all the way and get the 64GB versions. Probably higher resale value in eBay...

I hit the store at 7:32, clicked all the boxes for the 64 gig 3G. Had the usual moment of buyer's remorse, but instead of canceling/exiting, I satisfied it by changing the order to the 32 gig 3G instead. That worked for me.

post purchase or never purchased justification will always exit...I on one hand see many uses for it where it would replace my Macbook Air.

If you get buyer's remorse, you can always cancel your preorder. No big deal.

Sent from my iPad

:)

What gets me is all the people who complain that the iPad can't do everything a laptop can do. It wasn't meant to replace a freaking laptop. They are marketing it as something between a smartphone and a laptop. If you don't already have a laptop then buy a freaking laptop.

You're not the only one. I was waffling on 3G or non-3G and now I'm not so sure I want it at all.

ETA: I just reserved a 32GB for in-store pickup should I change my mind and want one on April 3. Doesn't cost me anything if I don't pick it up.

And at the end of the day, THAT is what it is all about!!! ;)

Welcome to ebooks. :)

Um. That hasn't been my experience with a Kindle for the past year or so. Usually books are anywhere from a few to more than a few dollars cheaper - at least for hardcovers / new releases.

Apple's deal with publishers drives the price up a bit, but it really doesn't approach the hardcover price.

Sorry, my experience has only been with titles that already in softcover, which have been without exception more expensive than a 'real' softcover book.

Out of curiosity, are the apple ebook titles actually available/viewable for pricing? I can't find them in a cursory web search. iTunes only?

That I can believe. Or at least, no real discount. I look at eBooks as a convenience though, I'd rather carry fifty in an eReader of some sort than have to lug around 3 or 4 in print.

Still, the cost should be significantly less. I always thought the 9.95 point that Amazon hit for new titles was about right - plenty of money for a publisher to make, and yet still reasonable for the buyer. As books "age" the price should drift down.

That's been my thinking all along. Being an over-sized iPod touch isn't bad but its not as extensible or useful as a full blown machine that runs OSX.

I hated it when it was announced, I was one of the guys on the forums saying how great a Tablet would be for business owners (who run on OS X), and how we could do such and such with it while travelling. So when Apple announced an entertainment device, I was bitter about it.

It has grown on me, it looks great. But I can't find a way to buy it. In the end, I can't actually use it for anything I want. Our Live Support service runs on Flash, and even if it didn't, we couldn't provide meaningful support anyway as it doesn't support multitasking.

Shame, cos I love new toys :(

Maybe I'm the minority here, but I just couldn't pull the trigger on the device quite yet.

I never buy anything new like this without trying it in person. Especially with something like the iPad where the main selling point is the different experience it offers.

If you were seriously considering without touching it, then dismissing it again without touching it, Doesn't it make sense to actually try it in person before making your final decision?

Unlike most I had no interest before official iPad announcement because it sounded like a $1000 OSX tablet, but I have been interested ever since it was announced as $500 reader/net tablet. But still there is ZERO chance I will buy until I spend some time using one to see how good the actual experience is, how good the screen is, etc...

I don't know how someone goes from ready to buy to rejection of a device based almost entirely on the change in user experience, without ever actually using it.

Note I can see that some can make their mind that the experience looks great and that is enough, or that experience doesn't matter to them and it doesn't do enough, but if you are bouncing back and forth, I think you really need to try it.

Funny, I was in bed last night on my laptop, reading, surfing, and watching videos on the iPad when I realized I was doing most of everything I would do on it already.

I reserved one for pu and will make the decision when I play with it at the store but right now I have my awesome i5 27" and am wondering what I really need this for.

Now if there is an app or two or three that blow my mind it will make it the decision easy for me.

You convinced me. I was sitting in my shopping cart waiting to press buy, and I've cancelled it.

Thank you!

Edit: I pulled the trigger. It's so shiny! :)

I don't understand the original poster acting like the iPad has to cost him $800 if he buys one. There is a $500 option here, and you may find that to be a much easier pill to swallow. Sometimes I think people over complicate things for themselves by assuming they need the most expensive version of everything.

I'm not over complicating things. The wifi option does not do anything for me and the small storage is too constraining. So that leaves the 32gb 3g model at 729 add in AppleCare and it's over 800. Simple no?
