Here’s the story:
  • Last Wednesday - got myself an iPad, payed with Apple Pay linked to credit card;
  • Thursday- got an email from my bank (BOFA), saying that my credit card will be reissued due to some fraud alert;
  • Friday - for certain reasons, decided to return iPad back to store for refund. Got an email from Apple re this.

Question is, since refund takes around 5 days, but my old credit card is already kinda deactivated (there is a different card number automatically in BOFA app), will my refund come to new card, to old one (don’t know how will it work) or this type of issues need to be sorted out somehow different? I’m freaking out, that refund might stuck in this financial limbo…

Thanks!

Contact BofA ... there should be a phone number on the notice you received about the fraud activity and the re-issue of your card ... explain the situation and see what they say ... it's possible that BofA will put the refund on the new card (they have all of the info, and, no doubt, transferred all of the legitimate charges to the new card) ... but call them and ask ... they will have a better idea of how it will play out than any of us here will.

I'm happy to report that refund was transferred to new credit card this morning. Hopefully this will give peace of mind to someone who might find himself/herself in a same situation.

^^^This.

Apple Pay has a phony CC number, and each transaction uses a one-time use number generated by the issuer. Magic happens behind the scenes whenever a new card is issued (eg. Sends you a new "renewal" card, and expiration date is automatically updated in Apple Pay).
