Critique my Logo:First Round

Now that I got CS3 can fully work on my portfolio, logo, website, and begin freelancing. I worked on this piece 10-15 hours, from thinking, writing, sketching, and final some rough samples. I just want some external feedback other than myself critiquing it.

Oo, neat! Overlapping letters are my perverse idea of fun.

I don't know if these things should read as MRN or RMN or even RNM. With the M darker, it looks more important than the others, hence the confuzzlement. Does the ordering of the letters matter here, or is this one of those "each is a component of a bigger thing" situations?

Concept 4 looks more to me like the letters R V N. 5 has kind of the same thing, it looks like a V supported by two i (rivin ?).

Omg that site is what I am trying to work towards to. Thanks for the link, I am not gonna tell you what letters they are since I want more feedback that I do not want to influence by me saying it.

make the letters the same color unless you want them to seem separate (if you do, maybe add a light drop shadow)

honestly to me the logos look they were flipped before being posted

I would say the text is MNR although its likely to be RMN.
Personally I'm not so keen on logo's that are letters that can't be read cleanly.

I'd also say maybe the choice of font could be better/different, the block style has been done quite a bit before, maybe try using a script/calligraphic font.
And as said if the letters are connected keep them the same colour, if the fonts are separated maybe consider just 2 colours, the middle being either darker or lighter.

A couple of things...

The lightest gray that you have is too light. At smaller sizes it will disappear, if it hasn't already. The next-to-lightest gray is almost too light for my taste.

Next, I have no idea what the logo means. I'm *assuming* that the three letters are your initials, since you said you were working on your book/website/etc., but this logo means nothing to me right off. As a consequence, I wouldn't likely stick around to find out what it means.

You can fix this by having different versions of your logo- one for the first viewing, and another for subsequent views. For example, the first time someone sees this mark, it could be accompanied with your name placed below, to visually explain where the letters come from, or what they mean. Then, on subsequent pages, it is already known what the letters mean.
