Here is an initial concept for a web design project for a client that is in real estate.

The site for the most part is static but the drop down menu will likely be flash and fall/drop down as the page is opened.

Let me know your thoughts on the initial, overall, homepage design, layout et.

Clearly, all of the content at the present time is filler as this is a template that is a work in progress.

Thanks.

Well laid out and uncluttered design. The only criticism I have is the background is a little light and blends into the text a bit...Perhaps a pale blue or other pastel shade? Otherwise a good job!

Cheers.

I actually had the background darker initially but I felt like it was a bit too punchy/powerful and therefore took away from the focus of the content.

I did prefer it darker at first as it appeared more sleek, but I ended up opting for the lighter shade that I posted. I will repost the version with the darker background tomorrow so you have a better idea of how that looks.

Thanks for the suggestions/comments.

it looks good, but I'd really consider using CSS3/HTML5 stuff for the drop down menu's over flash.

Your suggestion is well noted. Thank you.

Do the drop down menu in jquery, flash is icky.

I don't like the look of the menu, font is meh, shadow is weird, bevel is contrived.

Background too massive, increase alpha or make it lighter.

Also the listing border colour might be one or two ticks darker.

Really good work overall, just small things that irked me.

Nice and clean.

1 point. I think having the menu buttons in a vertical stack, top middle of the page is a little odd. It doesn't seem a natural place for them. I'd at least have a look at arranging them horizontally under the picture of the girl and house or move the stack to the left margin.

Maybe resize the house there and shift the menu over?

Ok great, thanks for all the comments.

I will try playing around with the menu. I was trying something a little more less conventional by having it toward the middle (it's actually still more to the left and not dead centre) as oppose to the left margin or a vertical bar et.

The thought was to connect the menu with both the girl and the house visually, but you have all made valid points regarding the placement and structure et.

I am going to remove the design and finish tweaking this morning to present to the client.

Cheers and thanks a lot for the feedback and suggestions.

I think you've done an excellent job and made some solid decisions.

Pros: You want the purpose of the site to be immediately known to the visitor. You achieve that with the large top banner and making sure the background wasn't too contrast heavy. The Remax banner carries the most contrast and color. Typography and color are all pretty standard, works well.

Cons: Flash is bad for mobile. The menu shapes don't follow the exact same language as the elements on the rest of the page.

Suggestion: The photography works well to state that this is a real estate site, but perhaps you can upgrade the photos to not look so stock. Real Estate agents don't just sell houses, they sell opportunities for creating a new life, for facilitating family life, parties, gatherings, etc. There is an emotional and imaginary component to what Real Estate agents do and I think you can really hit the ball out of the park with the perfect header image. Cause at the moment if I visited this site I would just assume the Agent bough a stock site, photography and all, when in fact she bought a custom one.
