Cross-Fire Bootcamp

Hi all,

I have a mac pro 1,1 with a mac edition ATI 5770 installed. I realize cross-fire doesn't work in OS X but will work in Windows on the mac.

My questions is if i buy a pc edition video card, say XFX 5770, and install it without flashing it, will cross-fire work in windows if one video card is pc and one is mac?

Unconfirmed for 5000. Worked for 4870, but took a year before the drivers that supported it was released.
 
I've done a little digging around but no current info, do the drivers support crossover with the 5770 yet? They are pretty cheap on ebay now, it would be a nice little boost in windows...

I don't know anything about drivers for Crossover, the Windows emulator for Mac.

If you mean Crossfire, then AMD drivers do support Crossfire in Windows. It is not supported in OS X.

In my opinion it would be better to switch to a single 5870 (official) or 6870 (works but not supported), than it is to go dual 5770. You can sell the original 5770 to make up the cost difference.

Sorry, I meant crossfire lol. Brain fart as they say. I am generally happy with the 5770, so an additional one in windows would be icing on the cake, and it looks like I could get a pc version for under $100 on ebay. Id be out at least 200 bucks on upgrading to a 5870 which makes it harder to justify. I agree though, the 5870 is the tits :)
 
Yes but 6870 is inexpensive, is almost as fast as 5870, uses less power, works in both OS X and Windows, and you wouldn't block two slots like you would with a second 5770. It's not officially supported though, and maybe that's important to you.
 
I use two HD5770's in Crossfire in Mac Pro 2008 (3,1).

One is genuine Apple, and the other one is flashed XFX with vanilla rom.

They only work in Crossfire mode on Catalyst up to 10.11. All never ones cause BSOD after enabling Crossfire in CCC.
 
Yeah, I'm generally of the opinion that Crossfire and SLI are a bag of hurt on Windows (and two bags of hurt on a Mac).
 
Agree with posters above. Everytime I give dual cards a chance I get burned (Even the internal dual processor single cards like 9800GX2 and 5970). Gains only in the 40-50% range when drivers work. I was constantly checking for better drivers, more optimized, actual dual card support for newest games, pissed off at all the micro-stuttering. I just gave up. I wait till fast new single proc card comes out and get that over any combo of cheapo's to get me the frames I need. No stuttering, stable and never think to upgrade drivers. Just play games. Very nice
