So my sr advisor said that I can have my 2018 MBP 15 CRU'd and replaced with an M1 Pro 16 and I am still awaiting the paperwork

I asked if it my device would be replaced with a refurbished Intel 16 instead of M1 16 since I would prefer to have bootcamp on my second laptop as some apps don't run well under parallels on Apple silicon and I already have another M1 16 MBP. I could use my desktop for those particular apps but sometimes it's nice to be more mobile which he understood.

I was told that they can only offer current retail units that are being sold for replacement devices and that they are not able to offer refurbished units, is this normally the case? It was mentioned that the other option would be to repair the device which is not something I would like.

Also, since my 2018 was the higher tier model, could I technically push for the 1tb config M1 Pro 16 since it's the middle tier or when they offered the base tier 512, it's because it matched the storage capacity of my current device with 512. Don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly happy with that option but are they technically supposed to match original retail price or just closest spec for spec

Finally, do they generally allow for device spec upgrades and paying the difference?

Thanks

**Update**

So they did not approve anything above the base 16" M1 MBP with M1 Pro, 16gb, and 512gb. However, they are letting me pay for the upgrades myself.

Ended up with an M1 Max 24 core, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd. Really happy with how helpful and understanding the T2 advisor assigned to my case was

How long did the CRU process take? I sent in my old MBP last week and still haven’t heard when my replacement will ship.

I'm actually still waiting for my device. There were some delay going back and forth and I just mailed the device in last week and they said they will place the order for the replacement device one they receive the old one.

Since I moved out of country, they couldn't do a preauthorized charge on my card and ship out the replacement device first like in the states.

Also, since the lead times for 16 inch devices are delayed again, does anyone know if CRU devices have a separate stockpile or it's the same as a retail device order?

Any updates on this? How long did the overall process end up taking?

Would really like to know the answer to this as well.

In the end, I ended up with a base M1 16 as the T2 advisor said he was mistaken; you're only allowed to do paid upgrades if they're doing a CRU for a like for like model replacement but if they upgrade your model, you have to stick with what they offered.

The device was shipped from a separate stockpile but in retail packaging; internet lead times showed approx 3-4 weeks with the occasion store showing some availability for same day pickup/delivery. I also sent them an email to clarify this and to see if it could be expedited since the process between all the store visits and finalizing everything took a long time. The device was delivered in about a weeks time after everything was finalized and was sent from one of their fulfillment centres, not store so it wasn't from the same day store stock.

Thanks! And do you remember how long it took for you to get sent shipping labels / box for returning the unit after the T2 rep put in the request?

I believe it was 48 or 72 hours. I had to provide my own box though but I'm in Canada; item was sent to the Canadian fulfillment centre while the replacement device was sent out from the US fulfillment centre

Thanks for the info OP! By chance do you remember how long it took for you to receive the replacement after the old one was delivered to Apple?

Hey there! Typically, as soon as your returned device is received, an order is placed for a new unit. The delivery time for the replacement unit will depend on your proximity to Apple's warehouse.
