The Crucial CT12864X335 will probably work in your 12" G4 Powerbook. Crucial does not guarantee compatibility and neither does NewEgg. NewEgg reserves the right to charge you 15% restocking if it doesn't and you want a refund.

If you don't want to take the risk, then I recommend purchasing from a reputable dealer who tests and guarantees compatibility with your Mac, and has a no-cost return if it doesn't work.

Thanks

After you gave me that link for datamemory (I think that was it) I'll be using them in the future even though I bought my 1gig from NewEgg before.
Good prices and a guarantee on ram as a 1gig stick for my iMac is going for $93 US as of today :D For the new iMacs a 2gig stick $380...just for info.

Datamem is kicking butt on Apple RAM prices right now with Apple compatibility guarantees, lifetime warranty and great customer service.

Crucial also has a good reputation for their Micron RAM, but they charge
a premium to guarantee their generic RAM for Apple and use a different
part number for the Apple quaranteed DIMMS

OWC sells Apple Factory OEM Samsung RAM, but it's runs a bit more.

Finally I have arrived.....
I bought RAMs from Crucial and OWC. Their web sites have the search function to find the appropriate RAM. I bought RAMs for my Ti PB, 15" Al PB from Crucial and for 12" PB and 12" iBook from OWC. They are match up well.

If you order from crucial, they DO guarantee your order:

Any reason why you find newegg to NOT be reputable? Newegg ONLY will charge a restocking fee if you order the wrong part, if the product is DOA they won't charge you - seems like a fair policy to me.

Anyway, madtodaimax what I usually do is go to crucial, look up your model, get the specs on the required ram, and then get it from newegg. Good luck

Yeah, you cannot go wrong with Crucial. If a buyer needs to confirm the RAM matching, he or she can send an e-mail and they will get back to you with a definitive answer.

Yeah, never had a problem with Newegg. Even with Mac stuff. They never ask when I have to return stuff. I always try to buy good stuff though. Like Samsung or Crucial. I always read the reviews first too. Never bought laptop RAM there, so I can't say what's good. If Datamem or OWC is cheaper or the same price, I'd go with them though since they do guarantee.

<sigh>
The RAM is guaranteed by Crucial [that has never been in question] but the compatibility with your specific machine is not. If you order from Crucial with their Memory Advisor tool they will sell you a different part number at a higher price. Which MAY be the exact same part when it arrives BUT that's the price you pay for them guaranteeing compatibility.

The specs you can read online alone are NOT enough to guarantee compatibility. You don't see the row and column organization, you don't see the SPD values. You put this same CT12864Z335 RAM in a 15" Powerbook 1.0 GHz or 1.25 GHz and it will fail miserably, even though the published specs are identical.

NewEgg does not guarantee compatibility with any machine. They state that explicitly. A RAM module may be fully functional but not compatible... that is not a DOA, and NewEgg has the ability to charge a 15% restocking fee if you want a refund. You can exchange the RAM for another module to save the 15% (and still be out the shipping charges) But since they don't carry any RAM that is guaranteed Mac compatible, you're taking the risk and expense on yourself for the next unknown module.

Good luck is what you need. If you are a Mac adept and don't mind testing for yourself and risking the shipping charges and delays in swapping RAM, then go for it. If you have one of the troublesome Macs, you may spend a lot of time and money looking for a bargain.

If you are a Mac newbie, or don't want to take the risk, just buy from someone who actually knows what a Mac is and is prepared to guarantee compatibility.

AND we're having this entire freaking debate (for about the 100th time in the past year) over a price difference of --- wait for it, US$125 with free shipping at DMS vs US$116 plus $4.81 shipping from NewEgg ---- the FOUR dollars and nineteen cents more it costs to get RAM that is guaranteed to work.

I am glad that your experience buying generic RAM from NewEgg has turned out OK. IMO it is not good advice however to say that it will be the same for other MR members with other model Macs.

I'm sorry to drag it up again, since it seems this topic has been hashed to death, but I'm going to buy 2 GB more memory and want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Everyone seems to say that crucial memory is the best, and that it is cheaper at NewEgg (though if you order the wrong type, you have to pay a restocking free).

Is the RAM from DMS Crucial RAM, or a different type? I want to make sure I buy the top quality RAM, but if two places are selling the EXACT same RAM for different prices, I'd prefer the cheaper price (though, as you said, four bucks for guaranteed compatibility from DMS is obviously worth it).

Right now I'm thinking of e-mailing NewEgg to make sure I have the right RAM, then ordering from them, unless DMS is selling Crucial RAM with a better guarantee. Does that seem like a good idea?

I ordered 2 1GB sticks from newegg and both of them caused kernel panics. They sell the lower-tiered line of Crucial memory, which is why the price is lower.

The memory I bought from DMS was Samsung and its worked perfectly.

Is the RAM from DMS always Samsung? On one of theirs it said "Samsung original" but the rest don't say what brand they are. How does Samsung compare to crucial?
