Hi
I am considering purchasing a new MacPro, 4x 2.8GHz, 2MB RAM and the 8800 GT graphics card.

Can anybody tell me whether this would be an effective games machine as well for current PC games. So taking something like Crysis for example which is very graphics intensive - would I be able to play this effectively on the MacPro ?

Follow-on question of the configuration recommended to play it if so e.g. which combination of parallels/fusion/bootcamp and vista32/vista64/XP
- or can it run under Mac OS X ?

thanks

It runs Crysis well. Crysis is a very demanding game. However, it runs all other games extremely well. This weekened I played MoH Airborne at highest settings with no drop in FPS. If you just want a gaming machine, just build a Windows machine. However, if you mostly use OS X AND still want to do some gaming, then it's a great combo.

You're going to need to use boot camp for gaming. I'd recommend 4GB of RAM. Just so you know, you said 2MB. If you only use 2GB though, you're fine with a 32 bit version of windows. If you have more than 3GB, you're going to want to use 64 bit. Vista vs. XP has been debated a lot, do a search. Personally I use Vista x64 so it will see all my RAM.

Perfect, thank you.
Will probably follow you down the Vista64 route - though maybe not quite as far as your 10GB of RAM :)

The Mac Pro can run anything. Though I would suggest upgrading the RAM if your going to try to run Crysis.

I have a PC with the quadcore, 4 gb RAM, 8600 GTS, and I can run Crysis pretty well.

Hah, yeah it probably is overkill. I'm actually probably going to switch to 8GB so I can utilize quad channel for the RAM (though still overkill)

so sick

crysis runs amazing on the mcpro with 8800gt, I got the 2.8 with 8x1gb ram, have only played it under xp as of yet (only seeing 1.99gb of my memory), but I am getting about 35 fps with everything set to high. Fans are as quiet as butter, I turn them up a bit to keep the temps down tho. I also overclock it with ntune to 700/1000 from 600/900, adds about 5 fps to gameplay and still runs super smooth. Anyone know the true limits of overclocking the 8800gt? Get crysis

could you tell me (PM me) how to turn the fans higher ?

and does someone know when the 8800 will come to the 1st generation mac pro's ? late 2007

I'm getting my 8800gt card for my mac pro tomarrow morning and eager to play crysis. It runs at very low settings on the HD 2600xt card but I waited 2 months now and finally I'm getting the damned card!!:D

So it runs about 30fps with everything set to high?

No one knows if or when the 8800 will come to pre-2008 mac pros. Use smcfancontrol, set fans in OS X, then reboot and the setting will stick in Windows.
