When my wife used CS2 she was able to have photoshop automatically update hundreds of photoshop file names with a new 3 character starter. So all the 10 character file names like this

xxxxxxxxxx
bbbbbbbbbb
ccccccccccc

would update with the same yyy as part of each file name like this

yyyxxxxxxxxxx
yyybbbbbbbbbb
yyyccccccccccc

At this point she is not able to determine how to do this same thing with CS5 and she has resorted, hopefully in the short term, to pasting the yyy into hundreds of file names. She also notices that the xxx file is over written by the bbbb file then over written by the cccc file.

Any ideas on how to have photoshop of 10.6.6 update file names with the same 3 character start.

Thanks.

I have used this facility ion previous versions of creative suite but havent got CS5 yet...

...but i can suggest that you look into automator actions, google it and you wuill find workflows for editing file names by batch.

Garand, your wife is making life difficult for herself. This is where it all is:

Photoshop > Menu: File > Automate > Batch...

With some batch-processing, you may have to set up an action first in the Actions palette.

If you have PS CS5 then I assume you have Adobe Bridge too - in which case you can do this with Tools>Batch Rename and select the options you want. May be quicker than via Photoshop.

You could also just not bother opening any of CS5... Automator can do this for you.

Just open Automator from your Applications folder, select Workflow, then drag the files you want to rename into the window. Next, on the left scroll down to 'Rename Finder Items'. Drag this into the right pane underneath the files you've just added. You will be asked the following:

Don't bother unless you think you are doing something risky.

You can then choose from a range of options how you would like to rename your files.

Hope that helps rather than just waffling.
