Curious who has insurance on their apple

I was wondering i read on another thread how someone had insurance on their laptop for theft and damage.I saw a company called safware that covers a $2500 computer like mine from amazon for $150 a year.

I wanted to know where other people get thier insurance from and the cost of it?


Also how long should you keep a policy on it 3,4, 5 years and is it worth it past 5 years for an apple

I know mine's included in my renter's insurance (which is $100/year for $20k policy). If you have renter's or homeowner's i think the best thing is to add it to that; paying $150/year for just the computer seems foolish. Also look into Undercover (http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/). I haven't had to use it, thankfully, but something like that is definitely worth the price on an expensive laptop.

I have all of my electronics insured just as a separate policy that I took out with my insurance company. It's $80/year for around 5k of equipment.

You may want to check the MacNN forums about safeware.

The good side: Safeware will insure you against theft, loss and accidental damage.

The bad side: for repair, Safeware's first choice is NOT Apple. They use a couple of third party repair shops, including a particular vendor that there have been a number of complaints about on MacNN.

The upshot of this is that if even if your MB or MBP comes back repaired properly, if your computer was still under warranty, it won't be after it comes back for repair.

I HAD safeware insurance for my laptops until I learned about this. Now, the better option (in my opinion anyway) is to get a personal electronics rider on your homeowner's or renter's insurance to cover the laptop. This way you're more likely to be able to go directly to Apple for repair, and get expenses covered.
