current AT&T sim into unactivated iPhone?

With the big price drop -- thanks Steve -- can I drop my three year old AT&T sim card from my Sony Ericsson t637 into a new unactivated iPHone?

What would happen if I did that? Would I just stay on my current phone plan?

Hmmm ... I wouldn't say better than the iPhone.

Thanks for the report. I had a T637 on a 3-yr old AT&T plan that I upgraded to an Cingular unlocked (w/iTunes) SLVR and was also seriously thinking about getting the iPhone. But since my simm card won't work I'll just have to pass.

I even read a hack site but it sounded my simm card was incompatible with the hack. I've got a killer rate plan from when AT&T became Cingular and am just to cheap to upgrade it, even for an iPhone. I calculated it would cost me $50 more per month to upgrade to an iPhone compatible plan.

It is policy to replace you SIM card at least once a year for free. I think two a year may even be the limit.

In short, microwave you sim card and take the phone into a store or dealer and have them replace it. You will get the newer 3G ATT Sim card. With that one you may be able to get it to work. I am not sure since I never tried the cracked activation method and I am not sure if this is the sim you need. I'm a contract activation.

Isn't it just $20 extra/month if you're already a Cingular/AT&T customer? The few iPhone owners I know were already Cingular customers and went that route, even the guy who still has some voice plan that hasn't been offered in the years.
