Hey guys. I have a 2010 Mac Mini, the last model with the cd slot. I've thought about selling it so I can buy a new Mini. Either the current model or the supposed refresh coming out soon.

I just wanted to know if the current model (without the cd slot) runs hotter/louder. That is my only concern.

I don't game on my Mac but I like it to be somewhat "future-proof". The C2D processors suit me fine but who knows how many future Mac OS's will support them.

Thanks guys!

Of course it runs hotter - louder, I don't know. I nearly never hear the fan except when I use it for power tasks.

Well I haven't used the old one, but current one is .... hot. During first week of usage I was simply shocked. Then I got used to it and it's pretty normal. At least I can warm my hands in winter.

You can hear something, but mostly it's so quiet you won't notice it. Until you do something wild and fans fire up... then it's crazy.

Anyway, it's a great small machine :)

I have the 2010 c2d server and the 2.3 i5. the i5 is in my entertainment cabinet in my living room, and I notice it gets really hot if I use handbrake on it. my server is on my desk, so its harder to tell the temp on it. the i5 is certainly faster than the server for handbrake.

Common sense would say wait until it isn't supported for the things that you need and then hop to whatever the latest and greatest is then.

I have the 2010 c2d and the 2011 i5 (one with integrated and one with discrete graphics) and the 2011 are much louder. I'm waiting for the 2012 hoping that they will go back to 2010 noise levels.

I have an early 2009 Mac Mini that I used right up until it started to stutter slightly. Lion wasn't very good to it. That was when I decided to upgrade.

I actually miss the DVD drive and the form factor of the 2009. The 2011 Mini kicks the crap out of it for speed, though.

btw, the new one gets very hot when run through high CPU utilization. The fan comes on and is quite noticeable. I never heard the fan in my 2009 Mini.

My 2011 (HD3000) is inaudible apart from when doing something like gaming/encoding.
