Excuse the click bait-y title;) - though I have actual concerns after reading through the forums a little:

After seven years my MacBook Air is on it's last leg.

I've been looking into the new line-up, mostly at the MacBook, since I don't see a point in buying another Air as it seems quite old by now and the pro is overkill since I have a workstation. Especially the fan-less design of the MacBook seems really great for writing and browsing.

But I feel like both, the MacBook and the Pro have this terrible keyboard problem. I'm I correct in assuming that buying an Apple notebook at this point is just a reason to be hanging around the Genius Bar because of a stuck key for a couple of times?

Would current owners suggest that waiting until the next update is advisable even thought that's around half a year?

You could wait one day too many. Don't neglect backups.
My rMB is two mos. old and problem free. Take model of choice for at least a test drive.

Thanks for the advice! Backups have already been made and new files are only going into cloud folders :)

I agree my MacBooks have been incredible. As with everything, I'm proud when I save for a long time to buy something and I really really take care of them. I've seen a few people not take care of their Macs and maybe these are the kind that get faulty.
The 2017 MacBook line up is flawless. It's perfect. Incredibly stylish, chic and super nippy. I simply love it!!! My older MacBook when is also used for around 6+ hours a day 7 days a week is almost 8 years old.
Apple really seem to source the absolute best components!!!

The 2017 MacBook is nice. I’d give it a shot. There are refurbished models available at a 15% discount from Apple, and right now the return window is until January 8th for products bought from Apple.

I'd suggest buying it if you need it or want it, while simultaneously realizing that there is some calculated risk involved, and the weak point of both the MacBook and MacBook Pro is without question the keyboard. We don't know how common failures are - arguably quite more than with the previous design, but quite less than all machines. It's far from the first Apple product to have a weak point (staingate, burngate, radeongate, bendgate, antennagate, etc.), but despite this I feel both the MacBook and MacBook Pros are good machines. In sum, like all electronics, it is a calculated risk. But if the machine will enrich the quality of your life, or improve your productivity/earning potential, or if you just really like it, I recommend them.

Read the forums without perspective and enough knowledge to know when what you're reading is full of it, and that's a sure fire way to end up deterred and confused (and frankly, MacRumors seems to want to keep it that way... controversy is good for business).

The MB & MBP do not "have this terrible keyboard problem" unless you define "terrible" as a component that is more likely to have issues than previous versions. If you're someone who does a lot of eating over the keyboard, or uses it in debris filled environments where contaminates are likely to get between the keys, you're more likely to have issues than with previous versions. If you keep your computer clean, it shouldn't be an issue.

Just my "theory", but I think the keyboard needs a little wearing in... I think a lot of the users returning units for keyboard replacements wouldn't have needed to do so if they just hung in a little longer and worked through it rather than immediately running to the Apple store and then posting endlessly about it here on the forums. I think it can rightfully be argued that shouldn't be the case in the first place, but what's done is done... they'll keep refining the keyboard, but don't expect the 2018 version to be any (or vastly) different.

I have a 2015 MB and I think it's just an awesome little laptop. The first month I had it, I noticed a cookie crumb fall in between the keys, and a key got stuck... but after a few days, it ground to dust and no problems in the 2+ years since (and I'm just a little more careful about that sort of thing now).

Remember that people like to complain, so you will always see more post about what is wrong then good. I love my MacBook from 2015 and I have never had any problems with it and I use it daily. I like the keyboard and when I got used to it I like it more then the one on my rMBP. (2012).

Apple sell millions of computers and there is only a couple of thousand people complaining. Even a expensive car for $100k-$200k has problems.
