Hi MacRumorers...

I'm expecting my new PowerMac later today or tomorrow and I'm going to be getting some more memory for it. I know the places to look, DataMem, OWC and Crucial (aware of the Crucial pricing games, etc...).

My question is whether or not the DDR2 memory prices are high or not right now. I can wait a little bit, but I've got some video projects I need to dive into and can't wait forever.

I'm looking at a 2GB (1GB x 2) upgrade and they're priced as follows:

OWC - $193/$289 (OWC vs. Samsung)
DataMem - $212
Crucial - $293-$375 (depending on specs, has been as low as ~$275 after the cookie clearing...)

Are these in line or should I wait 1-2 weeks and check them?

Thanks,
cpjakes

I always support OWC, but recently moved to Europe so... Shipping would cost too much, and Im going to be buying 2x1gb for my Dual 2.0 G5 soon.

Crucial has the lowest prices Ive found in Europe (they have an EU site) even with shipping... (can you elabroate on pricing games?)

I have OWC ram so far in my G5 and Id say go with them since your in the "states".

zerolight, that's pretty comparable to right now - how long ago did you buy?

point665, if you clear out your cookies and refresh the RAM list on Crucial, the prices will most likely be different, about a $20 swing...

I'm leaning towards DataMem right now, maybe I'll watch the prices for a few days.

Thanks!

I think relative to the past 3 months, the prices are high right now. I usually check prices at datamem and I saw them as low as $180 or so a few months ago and as high as $218 a week or so ago. I can't say for sure that they'll come down, but I think they could.

Part of me is kicking myself for not ordering RAM a few months ago and saving myself $40 or so. Then again, I don't even have my g5 yet, so that would have been a little silly.

I always have my cache/cookies cleared. The price has been the same for almost two weeks however.

http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Apple%2BPower+Mac&mfr=Apple&tabid=AM&model=Power+Mac+G5+%28Dual+2.0GHz+DDR%2C+4+DIMM+sockets%29&submit=Go

169.19 euros plus shipping for the 2GB kit, compared to about 180e plus shipping Id pay for Kingston ram from a store here.

Firefox on top (cookies cleared), Safari on bottom (viewed this page a few times) - both loaded within about 5 seconds of each other...

Wow, thats pretty damn weird. I wasnt saying it doesnt happen, but Ive never paid much attention to Crucial either (honestly I dont like them, Ive always bought my ram from else where, but for some reason in the EU they have the cheapest ram... Id probally feel more comfortable going with Kingston though).

Ive been following the EU site... Even now the price is the exact same, 169.19 euros plus shipping.

Will the 633mhz RAM go in the new G5's? I just got a dual 2.0 and want to upgrade as well. Crucial's website says 633mhz is compatable but the Apple website says that 16gb of 533mhz RAM can go in the system.

As for prices... Pricegrabber has Crucial 1GB PC2-4200 DDR2 DIMM's for US$90.50 (it's $145.99 on Crucial's website)

Well, I ended up ordering from DataMem, we'll see what the results are. A ~$25 swing isn't going to kill me, a ~$100 would make me mad...

Thanks all!

You can save some money with either of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141199 $159
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145527 $150

If you read the customer reviews both of these have been listed by G5 owners as compatible with their machines.
