Btw this is my first post so hello to you all. I i've read around and it seems like a very nice place around here.

My current thinkpad is working perfectly so ill wait 2-3 years before I get the macbook. I wonder how amazing the air will be then. It's even possible that the pro and air become one and my decision gets even easier.

Which direction do you think macbooks will take?

I had thinkpad and love it a lot.
Until u try OSX, u will learn thinkpad has solid hardware and battery life, however, the OS sucks!!! Honestly, x220 with 9 cell battery will be a excellent machine, especially for the price. I wish I can go back... but, i need spotlight search, multi touch, no stupid firewall, no crashing softwares...

I'm a thinkpad owner as well. Specifically, I have a tablet, an X61t.

I wish, wish, wish Apple made a real tablet PC. It's basically the only thing keeping me on Windows.

My thinkpad is 12" with 1400x1050 res, which you won't find on any Mac, however. Sadly, you won't find it on any PC at all anymore, including current thinkpads.

Seems like you're posting a teeny bit in advance but aside from what the Air will be like in 2, 3 years, I hope all computers will have changed a lot by then. For example, PCs are finally beginning to try to compete with Mac trackpads, which is one of those 'you can never go back' things. Hopefully PC trackpads will be great too soon. (My thinkpad doesn't even have a trackpad!)

And if I can dream, hopefully stylus driven tablets will make a comeback.

... By the way, I should have said: you won't find that res on any TABLET PC anymore.

What thinkpad do you have?

My prediction would be a completly new OS that is in between iOS and OS X and goes on all Apple devices. The choice of an iPad vs MacBook Air will be mainly if you prefer a trackpad+keyboard or touchscreen input. The MBA could have a mobile chip (ARM or new Intel chips) that is much more powerful than current mobile chips and even current non-ULV CPUs, possibly the same as the future iPad (5?) so it uses less power and get more battery life (maybe like 15 hours).

The Air will be much cheaper then as the main cost right now is the flash memory and its cost will go down dramatically as it is mass produced. Storage capacity probably won't be that high still for mobile devices like the iPad/Air, since you will rely mostly on iCloud, which will probably host even your OS settings and applications by then. For this reason I think there will be a 4G version of the Air, or maybe even standard. I think the MBP will stay and will be the one will larger screen options, more ports, more storage (like 1TB of SSD) and real CPUs. It will probably be in a more expensive range though.
