I normally use my regular Air screen when doing normal computing tasks but I have an HDMI connection for watching movies on a TV. The HDMI cord is directly attached to a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. My problem is that if I want to pause the movie and go back to the regular screen, the cursor is very jumpy and hard to put where I want it. I usually just unplug the TB adapter but it seems to me that I shouldn't have to do that. I was considering getting a TB dock and being able to leave the cable plugged in but now I am unsure. I am using a wired USB mouse routed through a wired Apple Keyboard, which by the way I no longer see on Apple's website.

Is this jumpy characteristic normal?

You might try a active adaptor, I run mine on a Vizio 43 4k at 30fps. works fine at 4K.

I agree there may be something good about cutting out the adapter but have a 2015 Air which of course has a Thunderbolt port but does not have a display port. Can a display port male plug into a TB port? Doesn't your solution leave me with another adapter and will it really resolve the cursor problem?

Thunderbolt 2 is the same connector as display port.
