Hello everyone.

I have my own domain which I run on my own VPS -- However, I'm considering moving to iCloud Custom Domain. As configuring would be more or less done in Mail.app, IOS iPadOS etc.

For the people who using their own Domain's. Is this fairly reliable now it's been a few months since release?

Best wishes ;-)

I was using a test domain for a while initially and have now been using my work and personal domains for the past month without any major issues. There have been a couple of brief general iCloud mail blips where it would give an error connecting to the server, but didn’t last long.

Just make sure you’re aware of the limitations before switching - 3 aliases per domain, max 5 domains.

I am also keen to hear how people are finding it - I moved my kids domain's over to it, when it launched, but they don't get much use... It looks like I may have a few other domains that I need to sort email hosting out for a few family members, so this could be useful.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but trying: It's been several days, and I still get the "Check your SPF records" alert, even after several days. I've triple-checked that they're correct. Any suggestions?

For those of you who switched multiple domains to iCloud, how are you dealing with everything coming into the same inbox? I am testing it out with one domain to start, and I first set up a rule to push everything to that domain into a folder for that domain (with the thinking that I'd do the same for other domains I add to my account), but then I lose the ability see that folder in the All Inboxes view (I've got some regular gmail addresses as well).

I may remove that rule to be able to see everything in All Inboxes, but if I add additional domains, not sure how to see only one domain's email.

I'm not loving it. I think I didn't have a clear vision beforehand that (1) everything would be in same inbox and (2) no older emails or folders would be imported. When they say it's for sending and receiving, they mean only sending & receiving. I think I thought I'd be moving my account to iCloud, and that doesn't seem to be the case.

I love having everything in a single inbox. Benefit: less connections to remote, less imap idle, less battery consumption.

How to handle?
Filter in your MUA for the receiver domain or create folder for each domain, route them over and subscribe the imap folder. Then you‘ll get notified.

What, now?
Create filter rules...

Condition for each domain or complete email address.

Code:
if receiver contains '@domain1.com' (or 'yourname@domain1.com'):
    mark mail as green

if receiver contains '@domain2.com' (or 'foo@domain2.com'):
    mark mail as blue

if receiver contains '@domain3.com' (or 'bar@domain3.com'):
    mark mail as red

Sorry, GUI example is from Apple Mail in German.

Log into iCloud.com then go 'Account Settings'! There is a spot for 'Custom Email Domain'! Real easy once you have set up your Domain email first!
I bought a domain with 123reg but haven't paid the extra for email , I don't think. Do I have to buy their email package before I can use this? Can't I just have the domain only and then use this iCloud custom domain to have my email accounts?

Tried it a few times today. Contacted 123reg customer support and they couldn't get it to work either

Since this is an active topic, I hope no one minds me asking my own newbie questions here.

First, per the comment above, if I'm currently paying an additional fee for email through my domain service (network solutions in this case), once I set up my custom domain in iCloud, can I just cancel that email service? (just the email, not the domain itself obviously.)

Second, when adding the iCloud DNS records, I assume that I delete all of the existing MX, TXT, and CNAME records, correct? So for example if I currently have three CNAME records - one each for mail, SMTP, and Autodiscover - I'll delete those (or delete two and change one) so that I end up with just the one CNAME record that Apple provides, right?

And third, I assume also that I don't touch any other records that I have; i.e., A, SRV, etc.

Oh, then finally, do I just delete the old email account in mail and everything will start showing up in my iCloud mailbox, or do I have to set up a new iCloud mailbox for the custom domain? And will I still be able to set my custom domain address as the default for outgoing mail.

Apologies if these questions seem obvious to the more tech savvy of you.

If you stop paying from the current email service you will not be able to use their email box anymore, but this does not affect your domain in any way.
You must remove all old MX records as these are the addresses of the email servers.
All other records may remain, they do not affect the iCloud email in any way.

You don't need to and won't be able to create a new iCloud mailbox in one Apple ID account. You can just continue to use your adress @icloud.com domain and your new connected custom email address.

Thanks for the explanation, but by this do you mean that I won't be able to use that email account at all, or that I just can't access it through their servers/webmail?

You just can't access to their servers/webmail. You can always use the same myname@mydomain.com address on any other email service.

I think this is the main reason why it is better to use the custom domain for personal email, your address is not tied to any one email service and you can always migrate without changing the email adress name.

+1 I'd love to know if you found a solution to this. Anything you can report?

Yes. "apple-domain=key..." and "v=spf1 include:icloud.com ~all" are TXT records.
Oh I think we might have a crossed wire?? You're saying the SPF record is of the TXT type, not the (discontinued) SPF type? Is that it? If so then that doesn't solve my issue. I've had it as a TXT record from the start. And I still have the SPF error
