Last week, I added a custom HD icon to my 2024 M4 Pro MacBook Pro using the Get Info box. After the Sequoia 15.5 update, the icon vanished. No big deal I thought. So I opened the Get Info box so I could delete the custom icon and restore the default. No good. I can't even select anything in the Get Info box because there is nothing to select! In decades of using Mac OS, I've never seen the inability to select/delete the custom icon in the Get Info box.

EDIT: Rebooting, restarting, safe mode, and resizing -> all failed. Toggling the HD icons in Finder Prefs failed too.

Thank you.

  1. Navigate to the root of the Macintosh HD by double-clicking it.
  2. Press command-shift-period to reveal the invisible files.
  3. Find an alias called .VolumeIcons.icns and follow it to the original location. *
  4. Delete .VolumeIcons.icns file.
  5. Restart Finder - in Terminal type "killall Finder" and hit enter.
  6. After restarting Finder, the default HD icon came back.
* /Macintosh HD/System/Volumes/Macintosh HD/.VolumeIcons.icns

After following my steps above, I reapplied my custom icon using Get Info, then restarted Finder and it worked.
