I'm using Mavericks with no intention of upgrading and everything's fine except iPhoto. I really hate iPhoto. I've looked through plenty of the "best iPhoto replacements" and none ever explicitly mention the ability to choose a custom order for displaying photos. I don't have time to try every one that has a trial - and some don't even have a trial - so I wanted to see if anyone already knew an app, by chance. I'm looking for an app that displays local photos in a clean, gridded GUI, but allows me to sort them in any order I choose without having to modify metadata etc. (like how in 10.10's Photos.app, one can simply drag photos to reorganize them in the grid). Hopefully one actually exists because other methods of custom sorting can be incredibly time consuming.

So why aren't you upgrading to 10.10 and give Photos a shot, because it really sounds as if it could fit your bill?
Oh, I'm fine with the photos app - it's the rest of the system I can't stand. It's just not worth the trade offs simply for photos, which is why I'm curious if anyone knows an app for this specific purpose compatible with 10.9.

Lightroom will do custom orders. Then you can rename so as to preserve the order if you need to say export.

XnViewMP will do custom orders, and sort by tons of criteria.

Corel's AfterShot 2 will also do custom order.
