I currently have my own custom SMS tones which i did using .aiff to .caf and SSH ... but my question is:

I currently have my SMS tones which are all about 2-3 seconds long ... if i set my tones to say a 2 min long tone (easier to hear and know i have a text), will they continue to play even when i open the Messages app and read the text or will they stop as soon as i do that?

Anyone tried this before? I really dont feel like creating the tone, SSHing in and changing it unless i know the outcome.

Thanks in advance guys.

You need a 2 minute tone to hear you have a message ? How long are your ringtones ?

As far as I know, the tone will be played all the way thru. But so what if it stops when you read the text, the tone is no longer needed if you are responding to the text message.

And it doesn't take longer than 5 minutes to do the whole create, convert, rename and SSH anyway.

Notice how I said "say a 2 min tone" ... for use as AN EXAMPLE!!!

My point exactly, i dont want it to play when i've opened the text and I'm replying to it ... coz i really dont see the point of this.

When you say it doesn't take longer than 5 mins to do the whole create, convert, rename and SSH .... that's 5 mins i would rather use in a more constructive manor, if it's not going to accomplish what i want, why spend those 5 mins on this.

Obviously your choice, but if you are like most of us, we spend more time reading these posts and writing replies than it would take to actually make one, drop it in and personally check it out.

Good luck. If you do decide to do it, let us know if the tone stops when you respond to SMS.

You realize you spent an equivalent amount of time creating this thread, then flaming a poster trying to respond to you, don't you?

My thoughts exactly. Thanks ! :)

Well the fact that i posted this whilst out of the house (away from a computer) from my iPhone, i was hoping that i would get a reply before getting back home and trying it out, and wasn't really expecting "smart and cocky" comments.

I dont know why people find it so hard to simply answer a question without adding a couple of "jabs" to the person asking the question ... such as why didn't you try it yourself, only takes x amount of time etc.

I've seen it far too often on MacRumors and i have thought to myself, why bother posting a reply if the question bothers you THAT much.

None of our answers are nearly as "smart and cocky" as yours. Try re-reading them.

My original answer still stands. As far as I can determine, the SMS tone will continue even if you respond to message.

I believe that was your question.

Why does almost every thread on this forum turn into a flame war?

The SMS tone will play to completion, no matter what you do.

The 2 minute tone will play all the way through, not stopping. The only way to stop it is to turn your phone off or restart the springboard.

It will annoy you. Stick with short sounds.

So looks like you have everything covered but I wanted to clarify one thing. Since ringtones can only be 40sec long, does this also apply to SMS tones?

Frankly, I keep mine short, that's the whole point. If I was having a "conversation", anything longer than 2-3sec would prove quite annoying.

The 40 second limit is imposed by iTunes. If you manually change your ringtones, sms tones, or any system sounds, they can be however long you want them to be.

Noob jailbreaker here, I thought I would pirate this thread and turn it into a learning tool for me and maybe others. I have a AAC file @256 kbps that I would like to put in the System/Library/Audio/UIsounds but see that it is a .caf format. How do I convert and/or replace one of the 6 sms sounds with my own??? And am I in the right folder?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Exactly .... and thank you for a straight forward answer :D

Thanks for the confirmation.

No problem, thats what this forum is all about right??? Helping other people.

Ok, all you have to do is convert the .acc (.m4a file) into a .aiff file .... once this is done, you need to rename the file to sms-received1.caf (or sms-receieved2.caf for the second sound in the list) .... if your on mac os x or windows, you will be asked if you want to use .caf or .aiff ... select .caf. Then simply ssh into the phone and replace the sound files in the location you mentioned above.

Sometimes you may need to respring the phone to get the sounds to start working.
Also, I tend to use Switch as a conversion software ... works great.

Hope this helps :D

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You...Worked just as you stated! Great directions and this was for a PC so I am sure it works the same for a Mac.
I now have a new sound for Text, now if only we could select for email. Someday maybe apple will allow us to be human and customize our phones. I am so tired of being an iRobot and conforming to the same as everyone else, this is why I have jailbroken...I want my iPhone to be MY iPhone, not the same as everyone else.

Thanks again for the how-to!!!

No problem :p

But I have some good news for you ... simply do the same and replace the new-mail.caf file in the same folder as the text message tones. You will then have your very own custom email sound.

Let me know how it goes :D

Cheers,

Sadly, it did not work. I did the exact same thing but the same sound remains:(

Disregard...i had to set it up under my new theme package UI sounds and not in the same folder as the other. Works now
