Hi Everyone,

I jailbroke my 3G 2.1 this morning, mostly because I want custom text alert sounds (yeah, weak reason I know, but it was bugging me). I know it can be done, but I can't seem to find out how. Anyone know how?

Thanks in advance!

You can create your own winterboard UISounds theme if you want, thats the easiest way and doesn't involve backing your sounds up. What you do is:

1) install winterboard
2) then on your windows PC create a folder called MySounds (or whatever)
3) Place your custom created sounds in the same name as they are found on your iphone. For example the custom text ones are called sms-receivedX.caf where X is 1-6 for the 6 choices they give you.
4) once they are all in place under the UISounds folder, upload that to /Library/Themes on your iPhone via some SCP client
5) go into winterboard and check your folder name you uploaded and hit the home screen. It will install the new sounds backing up your old ones.
6) Now if you've for example set your custom tone to sms-received6.caf you need to go into the sounds settings and change the sms text to Electronic (aka #6) and your custom tone is set.

I used to have a list of all the sounds found on the iphone but if you have SCP access you can see the names at /System/Library/Audio/UISounds/ on your iPhone.

Ha, ok I should have mentioned that I'm no way a hacker or anything like that at all. I also am on a Mac. If there's detailed instructions, I can follow them, but I don't understand most of what you wrote below :)

Thanks in advance!

i learnt all my stuff about this by just poking around in the file sructure of my phone and i have learned quite a lot. The instructions above are good and if you just give it a go and post back if yo get stuck on one part then im sure we will help :)

ill give u a set of instructions too

Create a folder on ur mac called "My Sounds" and inside that folder create a folder called "UISounds"

Convert your chosen alert to .caf using switch rename it to sms-received4.caf place it in the UISounds folder

Install winterboard from cydia on your phone.

Upload the "My Sounds" folder to /Library/Themes on your iphone using cyberduck

open winterboard on you phone and check the My Sounds option then press the home key your phone will respring.

then go into settings>sound>sms>Horn

and that sound play a preview of your alert

It MAY need to be less than 5 seconds im not too sure

Can't seem to have the Themes folder inside the Library folder...why is it missing and how can I activate that? I used Netatalk to access iPhone..

I don't think it will help your specific scenario, but I don't even bother using 3rd party apps to do this. I just write right over the built-in .caf files (I hated all of them), then simply reboot for them to take effect.
