Custom Text Alerts???

So I have an iPhone 3G version 4.0, just made a custom ringtone thinking I could set it as a text alert, thought wrong. How do I set custom text alerts?? I have read a few posts and heard things like jailbreaking and such and am very lost. I am using a mac computer as well, don't know if that makes a difference. Any help is much appreciated.

You can't use anything but the stock preinstalled text tones.
Unless you jb your iPhone.
