It could be the backlight in your panel starting to fail... The backlight is basically a smaller version of a fluroescent light tube, and when they start to burn out they turn pink...

Another victim of the crappy Philips LCD panel that Apple used in the early '06 iMacs. Only fix is to replace the panel. There have been a few class action lawsuits in federal court, but Apple defense is that the computers failed outside of the warranty period.
My 10 year old TV started to do that, and I thought it was screwed, but it came right again and its now 3 years later and its going strong!
So, you have a television that was built in 1999, but not using a Philips 661-3879 LVDS panel or similar display and its self fix is . . .
my friend has one of those older Macs, and she has the same problem with hers.
No idea what's wrong with it.. but you might wanna think of getting a new one, because I'm not sure if it's fixable.. unless you have applecare

I googled and since Apples DID clarify that the problem existed after the warranty that it was a defected problem from the manufacture therefor has to be replaced without a payment, unless of course you have to pay for shipping.
Although a lot of early 06 Mac owners had it fixed for free, a lot also had to pay.
BUT, the lines just cleared out. ^^
I woke the mac up this morning and it disappeared.
Edit: Just now the lines have regressed.
I'm working on getting the new Mac 27' though. Even though here in Mexico the price is about $500-$700usd more..

Replacement LCDs run the price gamut from $200 (used) to $600 (new) and take about 30-45 min to replace, being held in with four torx screws and the LVDS cable and inverter cable.
A somewhat practical alternative is to buy the mini DVI adapter and attach a 1440 x 900 LCD monitor and set the iMac display to "Mirror"

You don't have any friends in the U.S. that would buy it for you then ship it to you? (obviously you would pay them for it)
No but I am going back to Florida for winter break, of course, I'm not sure how paying monthly for it would work since I'm ONLY going for winter break.

The physical connection would be a snap, but the built in video card of the iMac isn't the greatest when it comes to matching resolutions and aspect ratios. Clearly the best solution would be to have an external LCD that had a native 1440 x 900 pixel resolution, so that circles don't become ovals.
I believe the Sony Bravia is a 16:9 format screen, perfect for 1080 HD. Check the Sony specs for what external input resolutions it supports and then check the iMac's video specs to see if there's a match.
