Whats that say about Android when millions of people depend on a third party developer to make their experience worthwhile? I wonder how many people would never buy an Android device if not for CM.

Maybe they prefer the hardware and options and just deal with the OS?

I cant speak for everyone but I know that I have heard multiple times is the variety and of course screen size of Android devices and features.

Exact same could be said for iOS and jailbreaking.

I don't recall anyone ever claiming Android or iOS were perfect. I'm all for anything that will improve the mobile experience so, good for them.

JB doesnt happen for many months after the release of an iPhone, but they still sell exceptionally well out of the gate which tells me most people dont care about a JB. However, you will see tons of people on XDA or other Android forums who will wait for a solid CM build before buying an Android phone.

I had cyanogenmod running on my 2013 nexus 7 within days of buying it. It was just a stable as stock.

Most users don't Jailbreak or Root/install custom ROMs and both platforms sell exceptionally well.

Millions? Really? I don't know what it says about Android, but I know what these posts say about you.

So, you discount the thousands of people that constantly roam the Jailbreaking section of this site waiting for a jailbreak, but use the stupidly outrageous number "millions" of people that wait for a CM build for their Android phone before buying? Think about that for a second.

May I remind you, the S4 has been a great seller, yet the bootloader is STILL locked on AT&T and Verizon. Sure, the devs found a way around it with Loki on the early software, but if you accepted the update a few weeks after launch, you now can't root or ROM your phone. Does that stop people from buying it? No.

Why? Because the average person HAS NO IDEA what CyanogenMod is. If you walked up to 10 people on the street and asked them what it was, they would have no idea.

I'm on a LOT of tech forums and cell phone forums, and I can honestly say I've not seen one person say "well, I'm holding off on buying until there's a CM build for that phone". Unlike here, where it's nearly every day that you see someone say they're holding off on either getting the 5S or updating their older iPhone to iOS 7 until there's a jailbreak available (I've already seen one or two in the "iOS 7 is out" thread).

Think before you speak, please, and keep your Apple fanaticism in the proper forum instead of trying to start arguments here.

Were you hoping for some internet flame war where we call each other trolls and fanboys like 11 year olds? You have your opinion, I have mine. Neither is wrong.

Absolutely not. But what's the point of your post? Why come post that in the Alternatives section other than to stir the pot? Your post added nothing to the discussion and only serves as flame bait.

8-24 million users out of one billion + android activations. No different than all the millions of iOS users than jailbreak their iPhone to make their phone more functional.

Very interesting and I hope all the success to them. There are so many things big and small that could be better on Android.

I'm interested in seeing if they're going to overhaul the user experience in a significant way, in other words departing from the current scheme where the main differences between various ROMs (3rd party or OEM) are the number of extra features, configuration options etc. Pretty much all launchers follow the same pattern and the same goes for lock screen replacements.

As it is I feel mobile devices could do more with multitouch gestures as nearly all platforms right now only extensively employ the left, right, top, down, tap, tap and hold gestures. Surely adding some two or even 3-4 digit (probably only on tablets though) gestures wouldn't hurt.

However, the marriage of software and hardware is important too. It has worked well for Apple and on Androids, Samsung has been able to cram in a bunch of unique features based on hardware capability, although most of them haven't been all that great. I'm guessing this will be less of a deal in the future as most flagship phones right now tend to have the same sensors, SoCs etc.

In his defense the article does say that Cm has an 8 million user base and that's just those reporting. Cm predicts it could be 2 or 3 times that.

..... for the record I always turn off reporting statistics when using CM and other CM based roms, so it's very believable.

...... Just playing devil's advocate.

Fair enough. I still have a hard time believing there are 8 million people using CM, though. Then again, if you factor that over all the devices they've ever put out a build for...then I guess it's possible.

Just about the time I get so irritated with all the idiotic comments by Android fanatics (not just fans) along comes this type of post to remind me that it's a two way street - and heavily travelled unfortunately.

Also, you probably have some 3rd party developer apps on your beloved iDevice.

His question was "I wonder how many millions of people would not buy Android if not for CM?"

1) Who knows. Could be all 8 million or zero out of 8 million.

2) In the context of his post, based on the previous sentence ("Whats that say about Android when millions of people depend on a third party developer to make their experience worthwhile?"), he's implying that all 8 million, or at the very least, a majority of that 8 million would not buy Android if it weren't for CM.

And I think that's what makes his question silly. The implication that all those millions of people buy Android devices only for CM.

----------

To get back to the point, this is actually really interesting and potentially exciting. I've always heard great things about CM.

If it's based on Android, won't it basically be another skin, albeit a really well done and popular one?

Either way, yet another option for those looking for an even deeper Android experience. This is nothing new in the Android world. Just a new player.

I have an S4 and a iPad mini and I use both Android and iOS everyday. Both have their pros and cons. To think one is so vastly superior to the other is silly. However, vanilla Android is not a great user experience and greatly benefits from 3rd party like CM.

I see alot of people with the galaxy s3 and 4 phones and most are stock running touchfail.

Nothing is wrong with touchfail and it works fine for many.

CM is really something for more technically inclined people, to assume CM is giving android life is not really sensible.

Android is fine the way it is.

I can probably say I've seen few nexus devices in the wild the same I see cm devices in the wild.

I understand CM and what they're trying to do but google is probably going to shut them up and prevent them from whatever they're trying to get access too from google.

Android is better by the majority skinned.

I probably seen 3 or 4 nexus devices since it came out.

I see sense/touchfail everywhere.

Same with IOS people use android to text, email and call. Instagram is always open on the android phones I see.

I don't think CM will go far personally. They're a small minority.

Ive always turned reporting off on my touchpad too
Cant say Ive ever seen another person running CM in the wild though

Stock android or CM are the way to go IMO
not a fan of skins and I like updates

What build are you on? Every nightly I have been running has had at least one issue I have to deal with every day. Lately whatever keyboard I use constantly locks up.

There are millions more who have never tried it. Im one of them. It isnt as easy to get that on your phone so somebody who has never rooted wont choose that one to install as their first one and ive installed ROMs before. I just havent felt the need to do so since Jelly Bean.

I have no idea what this means and right now i dont care just like i havent cared about Samsungs Tizen OS that has been shown before. Maybe later they will become relevant.
