Hmm, looks like my earlier problem has become academic. My last attempt to run Eraser to completion appeared to have crashed, but after rebooting the device I now find that
The original problem is still there (i.e. Messages and Facetime don't work, the 'iMessage Your carrier may charge...' message appears regularly).
The device is clearly not in a factory restore state, but also the jailbreaks seem to have gone.
I erased with Eraser 0.9.18, since the most recent version produced error 1410 - could this have led to this situation, or has something gone wrong during the erasing?
But the most important question now is: how to proceed?

- Cydia and all the other jailbreaks seem to have gone
- Apps seem to be in place
- All other settings seem to be in place too

- Would it be safe, with the phone in this apparent unjailbroken state, to "Erase all contents and settings" from the iPhone Settings? Is there a way to find out?
- If not, should I try to rejailbreak it in this state, and start again with the Erasure process?
- Or should I really give up, and restore the device to 9.3.5 and forget about the jailbreak?
