Ok so I have a Verizon Galaxy S3. I have never rooted before. Anyone else rooted their Verizon Galaxy S3? I've heard it is the most annoying to root due to the locked bootloader. I'm wanting vanilla Jelly Bean on my Galaxy S3.

My main questions are: How difficult is it to un-root the device if I decide to for any reason, and will I lose all my data? And I've heard the best root to do is called AOSP Cynogenmod. Any help would be great as I wanna find out as much info as possible before I start. I'm a little nervous.

I haven't read anything about the GS3 having a locked bootloader. Is it just for the Verizon version? Anyways, I'm curious about this is as well. Looking forward to the responses.

As far as I know, it is the only one with a locked bootloader.

Yeah i don't know why, but it seems that the Verizon one is the only GSIII with a locked bootloader, which makes things a little more complicated. I found some info after digging around XDA.

Check out that guide and do read the entire thing. Don't read part of it, read the whole thing first a few times and make sure you have a good understanding of what you need to do. You can also do a quick google search for some videos to see if there are any of those. I'm guessing there are since the GSIII on Verizon is quite popular. Otherwise, XDA is great resource for this kind of thing and it's device specific.

Your concept of root is so far off it's mind boggling.

fyi - AOSP is completely different from cyanogenmod, and neither are root processes.

Please go check out the Verizon SG3 development section @ xda developers forum.

Read as much as you can first and if you decide to root, then you'll be in the right place from there.

How is it completely different? I thought Cyanogen and AOKP were both based on AOSP? (I'm new to rooting/flashing so I'm no expert)

It is based off aosp but CM has a plethora of added functions that aren't available in stock Android. Also, a lot of those functions might be a bit overbearing for someone just getting into root & romming.

Just going to point out rooting and lockedbootloader are 2 different things. You do not have to unlock your bootloader to root your phone.

I see. But I disagree about CM9 being overbearing. I'm fairly new to custom ROMs and I didn't feel that way when I started using it. I had only used AOKP before it.

Yes it can be annoying to unlock the bootloader, you have to go to the google play store and install the free "verizon gs3 bootloader unlock app" then you have to press a button, I know, very annoying.

you can not flash custom roms or kernels with a locked bootloader. (well you can use k-exec but its a pain and not as safe)


its so funny, on android forums they are talking about very technical things, and the techno slang is going everywhere. On here in the iphone section its all, how do I order an iphone, I cant believe some of these people were able to use the computer to comment on the forum...lol

Yes they tend to get technical on xda and sometimes it's hard to keep up especially for someone with no background like me

I'm sorry that I am misleading. As I said I have never rooted before. I'm not trying to do any crazy mods. I just want vanilla Jelly Bean on my Galaxy S3. That is all I want to accomplish. I just hope the current build is stable.

So let me guess this right, I need a microsd card. I need to backup my IMEI/EFS. Root the device, then unlock the bootloader. Install CM10, then install CM10 4.1.1 based kernel. Then I'm done? And if I want to revert back to the stock, TouchWiz filled OS.. use Odin to flash back?

As far as I know CM9 comes with it's own kernel when you flash it so I assume CM10 does too.

CM just announced that they'll be releasing monthly builds for specific phones so maybe if you don't want to be flashing nightlies then ypu can get this. Too bad it isn't available for the International GS3. http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cyanogenmod-10-m1

Sorry I'm not sure. I've only flashed CM 9.1 stable and I would check but I don't have my phone at the moment. (got broken, waiting for replacement).

Someone else will have to answer that and the rest of the questions I couldn't answer.

1. When you root your phone and install a custom ROM such as Cyanogen, the Gapps are in a separate package and do include Google Wallet.
2. You can root and flash back to stock without ever letting your carrier know what you did, but you have to follow the directions at the XDA forums

I'm not looking to be flashing every week. I just want a stable build of vanilla Jelly Bean. Also I bought a 16gb microSD. How can I back everything up to it? (apps, pictures, texts, etc?) I sync with Google Contacts so those aren't a big deal. Also, I use the Mobile Hotspot bloatware app for well.. hotspotting, will that carry over to JB? As I have free hotspotting with my plan.
