I'll be traveling the next couple days so my internet access may be sporadic during the day.

Hopefully, Portia hears some more info at the door then she did initially (sneaky halflings :) ).

Portia fails a perception roll, so she hears nothing.

@Moyank24 @Plutonius @Huntn @twietee @Scepticalscribe I'm back -- life got a bit crazy the last couple of weeks. It still has a potential to get even crazier so don't be surprised if I disappear again. But for now I'll try to see this dungeon through.

No problem. I figured something was up and hope things are going ok for you.

Do you figure this will end at the conclusion of this dungeon or will you try to run it until the end of the campaign (i.e. we rescue Veit's cousin) ?

Portia (@Moyank24), I think your choices are
1) Open the other door in the hallway.
2) Open the door where you heard all the voices.
3) Return to the group and tell us what you found.

I will run it through the end of the dungeon -- I owe you guys that much.

The rest of the game, we'll see. I think we (I) need a hiatus, because running this game is starting to feel like a chore. Too much rolling, not enough story (I don't fault you guys -- it might be the forum format that's impeding it) :)

I'm thinking I return back to the group, and tell everyone what I found. We can plan on from there!

You don't owe us anything, just saying. :)

As for the game, I defo want out/hiatus after we've finished this dungeon. I agree about the forum format not working in favor of a d&d kind of game with a lot of micromanagement which just takes forever and is plain boring that way. (Not saying I didn't enjoy it but the time-stretching is unbearable imho).

This is a very casual affair so the time involved does not bother me as long as the participants stay interested enough to participate in a meaningful way. I think the key is mostly player interaction, not that it takes up that much time, but it does embody a casual obligation. How about a vote? If most of us are tired of this adventure, why not kill it now? Or reorganize into a new group, if there are people out there interested in continuing, @ravenvii as DM, how are you feeling about things and your role as ring master?

Who is still enjoying the game? I am.
Who would enjoy it more if everyone was engaged? I would.
Who wants to bail? I won't have any hard feelings if you do. Ultimately this can't be forced and remain fun.

One way to keep D&D fun in a forum format would be to keep the adventures short. A single dungeon per stint, so that players can feel free to come and go.

I'm thinking it'd be possible to break the Lost Mine of Phandelver into a series of mini-campaigns. I'd get rid of levels and items, and just start the players off at a appropriate level for that dungeon, give them some gold and drop them in Phandelver so they can buy stuff or interact before heading off to a dungeon.

good idea! somebody lures them out (maybe Portia?) while the others hide behind the rugs and old robes, next to that entrance and when they rush past us we go and kill 'em all from behind, with absolutely no remorse and with extreme prejudice! :)

With a grunt, Veit dropped the right leg of the oozing and reeking corpse of the creature. The party has dragged the creature all the way to the other side of the crevasse, down the stairs, and propped its body against the door. The body was heavy, but was not an issue for five able-bodied adventurers.

Eager to spare their noses of further abuse, Bartolomeo and Dale joins Claus out of sight in the storage chamber as Portia scratches the door and scurries out of sight just as it is swung open by an angry Redbrand.

"Agghhhh!" the Redbrand scrambles backwards as the creature's body collapses into the room.

The party hears shouts of disgust and anger as the Redbrands attack the creature. It took them a few stabs before they realized the creature was dead.

You hear more shouting -- you make out the voices of four Redbrands.

More shouting follows, then suddenly silence. You hear the guttural growls of another species -- you are suddenly reminded of Klarg.

Bugbears? Here?

One of them suddenly appears in the southwestern entrance to the crevasse, looking around and growling, its Morningstar out and ready.

"Come, you *********! Search the area!" you hear the Bugbear shout. A goblin appears from behind him. It takes a few timid steps forwards.

"Move, or you will be dinner tonight!" the bugbear shouts, giving the goblin a kick, sending it sprawling. It scrambles to its feet, its face stuck in a look of terror.

It scurries across the bridge, and slowly approaches the storage chamber where the party is hiding. As it approaches, it suddenly spots you hiding in the corners.

"You -- you don't --"

The goblin stares at you in pure terror before toppling over. The goblin has fainted from fright.

@Plutonius @Moyank24 @Huntn @twietee what do you do now?

We could also run back where we came from and enter the mansion front porch style - they'll be busy in the basement. :D

(We may lock em in as well...) ;)

We heard four Redbrands and now we hear a bugbear and goblins.

I think they are separate groups and the Redbrands might have gone back upstairs (we only hear now the bugbear and goblins). The Bugbear and goblins might have originally been behind the other door.

I'm still leery of us going in from above since it's very open and archers could ruin our day :).

If we can get the bugbear on the bridge, we can fill him full of arrows.

@ravenvii, was the goblin speaking common and which character would have the best chance of imitating it based on skills / stats ?

If imitating the goblin doesn't work, which character has the best chance (skills / stats) of taunting the bugbear to cross the bridge ?
