DAAAA! now the 8800GS! I need for Crysis!!!

Please Please Why Why??? If only apple made their video cards exchangeable in the imacs. I have a 24" that i play Crysis with but i NEEEEED an 8800. Arg. Is there any tech junkie out there that can mod my 24" to accept the 8800??? prolly not right? i can dream.

The 2600 Series is much worse then the 8800 derivatives. Crysis is going to still need much more then the 8800 though. It's still up in the air which 8800 the one in the iMac can be compared too. :eek:
 
crysis rapes the 8800gts 512 at 1900x1200, and the 8800gs pales in comparison with the 8800gts.

I wonder why they don't just put in the 8800M GTX, since they don't have to worry about power consumption or heat (compared to a laptop).
 
I never tried Crysis but I heard even people with high end PC's had problems running the game full out. So I'd imagine any Apple would have problems. I don't think this new card would be enough.

Why wouldn't they need to worry about heat? I'd say heat would be a pretty big issue in a iMac. You have the LCD, CPU and all the components right there all together in a tiny case with out much air flow. I'd guess heat is the reason they are using laptop CPU's rather than desktops.
 
i think that apple will release the 8800gs for the old imacs soon, just like what they did to the macbook pro's
i was really thrilled when i saw crysis on youtube with the macbook pro, and it was really cool :eek:

if they use a card designed for a laptop, they dont have to worry about heat as much because its a much larger case than a laptop

Yes, I read it all, but a laptop has the LCD in a separate area.. with the iMac it's all together adding more heat around the computer componants. I dunno if you have ever felt the back of a stand alone LCD, but I have 2 sitting here in front of me and they both get fairly warm.

Yes a iMac case is a bit bigger than the average laptop, but it has the extra heat sourse of a built in LCD.

This is true. Even the absolute best PC out there with dual 9800 GX2 nVidia, 8-core 3.2GHZ Intel CPU, and 16GB of RAM cannot run crysis completely full (with AntiAliasing and all that) at 24" screen size (1920x1200). Maybe next year...

What sort of crazy alternate reality are you living in?
 
Crysis runs decently on my 24" with the 2600. Using XP, latest XT drivers, GPU slightly overclocked, and a custom config file at around 1400x900. FPS usually in the high teens to low twenties in outside environments (inside I get high twenties to low thirties). Not great, but acceptable for me. And with the custom config file it really does look great (I'll post some screens later if I have time). Temps stay under 60 with the fans turned up so I'm not too concerned about the OC.

I could definetly go for one of those 8800s though. I just bought my iMac (my first Mac purchase ever) about a month ago on an impulse. My wife has always been an Apple fan, and I had a bonus check, tax refund, and the upcoming tax rebate burning a hole in my pocket. Too bad I hadn't discovered all the Mac forums and resources on the web yet. Could have had a *significantly* better machine. Oh well, live an learn. Plus, it is still a very nice computer. It may have converted me into a Mac fan :)

Chasing the latest and greatest only leaves you continually disappointed and broke anyway.

when did you buy your imac if I'm not mistaken if it was within 30 days you can go get the updated version.

Ha! Well I could always run by the Apple store and tell them my sob story. Stranger things have happened, with Apple giving rebates to iPhone owners, etc. I won't be getting my hopes up, but it's worth a shot. Thanks!

Edit: I forgot I already threw away the box and all original packing materials. That would probably put a damper on things.

he's probably talking about the 8800gt being available for the old mac pro (NOT MacBook pro). The difference here is that iMac gpus are not upgradable - so no, we're not going to see the 8800gs as an upgrade for old iMacs.

How are the GPUs not upgradeable? They don't appear to be soldered to the board. Apple may not make it available as an upgrade, but assuming you could get your hands on one I would think that it would work.

Ah, I didn't know they would be that hard to come by. You don't think you would be able to get one from a refurb/resell shop?

Do they? I was thinking the CPU was pictured here:

It looks like they both have their own heat sync. It seems to me, that as long as they both still use the same motherboard (logic board?), the internal structural differences should be minimal.
 
I imagine upgrades might not be possible due to the move to 64-bit EFI from 32-bit EFI. We noticed this with the 8800gt upgrades for the old Mac Pros.

Of course we wouldn't know unless somebody tries.
 
If you really, REALLY want, you can just make an adapter for the MXM port. It's just a normal PCI-E 16x port with extra pins to output the video to the internal screen. Just make sure it's an Apple card for the Mac Pro or you're limited to just Windows. :p (Don't forget about that 8800gt upgrade problem.)
 
From what I can see, the options for upgrading are so limited that even if it was compatible and I could actually find a card, I'm thinking it would be more trouble than it is worth. It would be nice to have the 8800, but it's probably best if I just accept my iMac for what it is: a nice, everyday machine that happens to be able to play video games OK. I'll save my time and money and build a gaming rig one of these days (aka years down the road). Thanks for the answers everyone! And sorry if I highjacked the thread a little :)
