I recently moved from a 1,1 Mac Pro running Logic 9 on Snow Leopard to a 4,1 Mac Pro and updated to Logic x on Mavericks. All seemed to go well but I've started getting kernel panics, always when Logic is running. The latest report is below. Can anyone make any suggestions as to what might be causing these? I really don't know where to start - hardware, software?

Many thanks for any help!

How did you move your user over? did you just migrate it from the old one?

Could be something with the audio interface is my guess, is there a new driver for it?

Maybe disconnect it, open logic and try it without it?

Cheers for the reply.

I moved the SSD from the old Mac Pro, updated to Mavericks and then installed Logic X. There were a few apps which showed as being incompatible so they were updated or removed.

I've run an extended memory test (and also the graphics RAM) - no errors reported.

I've just checked the Audiofire console and it informed me there was a firmware update available so I've flashed that just now. Fingers crossed!

Have you changed any hardware lately?

Machine Check errors are often hardware related.

Have you changed any hardware lately?

Machine Check errors are often hardware related.

No hardware peripherals have been added recently (other than the Mac Pro itself being new to me). Interesting to know that about Machine Check errors often being hardware related - hopefully that will make it easier to track down the problem.

It's a shame that reports aren't able to be more specific about what caused the panic. That would save a lot of people a lot of time.

I tried removing all USB devices apart from the Apple keyboard. No luck. I've just taken out one of the graphics cards (NVIDIA Quadro 4000) and will run it like that for a while.

When inside I had a look at the RAM modules. All 6 are branded Kingston but one is half the height of the others - never seen one that shape before. The RAM passes TTP and Rember extended tests but I'm wondering if this mismatch may be an issue?

UPDATE: After running the system minus the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for over 24 hours (so down to 2 monitors running off the ATI Radeon HD 5770) everything seems stable. Too early to say it's fixed but Im wondering if the problem may lie with some incompatibility between the Quadro 4000 and the Radeon HD 5770?

There had been a few graphics glitches since I bought the MP and installed the second graphics card - e.g. things going missing from the desktop. Wonder if this was connected to the issue.

Are all the half tall RAM have the same serial number?

Not sure - I haven't been inside today. Trying to get work done while it's working properly instead of fiddling. Good point though - next time I open up I'll make a note of the serials.

BTW it's only 1 module that's half hight, not a pair.

I bought another Radeon 5770 (second hand ebay) to match the existing one, as removing the Nvidia Quadro seemed to have stopped the panics for a couple of days. Installed, but a few hours later another panic. Aarrrggggghhhhh!

I've removed the first pair of RAM sticks (2Gb each) from slots 3 and 7, including the 1/2 size one mentioned above. Waiting nervously!

UPDATE: Panic 2 hours later. Will try removing the remaining RAM pairs. That will be the last hardware test available to me.

are your 3 3rd party kexts up to date? Make sure you're running the latest versions of DVDFab, and Handsoff.
USB overdrive is already at the latest rev.
handsoff is one minor rev back, looks like. you've got 2.1.3, their site has 2.1.4.
Also, I'd consider switching to a DVD ripper that doesn't need a freakin' kext!

Thanks for the suggestions on the kexts. The latest is, touch wood, all seems to be running smoothly again. The last pair of RAM sticks were removed and the panics stopped 3 days ago. They had all passed every extended software test (TechTool Pro, Rember, etc) but there was obviously some obscure problem with those sticks.

Anyway, it's blissful to be back up and working again. I've already bought some replacement RAM which is working well and I'll sell on the spare graphics card at some point.

Thanks everyone for the help and hope this is the last post in this thread!

Are all the half tall RAM have the same serial number?

That's a part number, not a serial number. It's typically the same if the RAM is roughly the same make and model.

Likewise, even though DDR sticks *can* implement a unique serial number, doesn't mean that they actually do. I've never seen any sticks (Apple or third party) for Mac that properly report a UID for any given DIMM stick- usually it just shows up as zeroes under System Profiler.

-SC

I really mean serial number, not part number or anything else. However, I miss the part that his machine only has one half tall RAM, so can't compare.

I've seen some half tall Kingstin RAM (non-ECC 4G stick) from the China Taobao.com all share the same serial number (printed on the label, not in system profile), which is much cheaper than normal RAM (up to 75% cheaper), but may cause system crash and usually fail in around 3 years time.

The photos on the store is a normal size RAM, but if you order it, they will ship that half tall RAM to you. :(
