Well long story short, I ordered a refurb 27" iMac I5 for the girlfriend and it arrived with a vibrating/noisy HDD fan (makes the noise regardless of rpm) and could be heard across a quiet room.

Dropped it off at a Apple Store and was told that they will call me in 1 to 2 days..well 3rd day rolled around and I called them myself. Took forever to get hold of somebody and they said that a test was ran on the imac but nobody recorded the outcome...a re-test was required. Received a call back the same day but they could not hear anything in their "quiet" room.

Scheduled an appointment to go in and show them the sound, but they would not allow me to go into the "quiet" room to point it out to them (how do they expect to hear a vibrating fan right at the genius bar?). I was then getting ready to pack it back up and send it back when I noticed the base was all scratched up. Pointed it out to the guy and he got the manager; manager then tried for half an hour to swap my refurb for a brand new I5..but none-the-less the system would not allow him to do so.

Called Apple and they e-mailed me my return info and setup another refurb for overnight. I am out of town right now and will be back tomorrow..I told the guy and he said it would be best for me to ship it to my home address since it could take longer than 24 hours for it to ship out.

Well it did ship out the next day and was expected to be delivered today..I called Fedex early in the morning and was told that they require at least one delivery attempt before they will hold it for pick up. Later in the day, I checked the tracking and it showed delivered. The signature was with my first initial and my last name (which was spelled wrong and the package was under my girlfriends name), and it also had a note that it was left with the security guard up front (I live in a gated condominium). The security guard is not allowed to receive and hold any packages for the residence, but I called them regardless to check, and was informed that they did not receive anything.

Fedex said they required around 10 days to do a investigation on it. Apple said they will transfer it over to their trace department(?).

Regardless, I am now having to wait until the investigation is over until they will either send me out a replacement or refund me my money. Class is starting next week...:(

IMO you need to speak with somekind of manager at Fedex. If they wont get it done quicker, tell them you want the name of the driver for your police report.

Thanks for the support guys. I'm not sure how the PD will play into this situation since there are too many variables. Regardless, fedex will most likely have to pay up since there are some there is discrepancy in the tracking report. I am awaiting for Apple to call me back which should be within 24 hours.

I think what feeth was getting at was not actually getting the police involved, but usng an "implied threat" to get the police involved by mentioning "police report" in order to spur Fedex into faster action.

This tends to work. In the UK I had a lot of problems with my Mac, they refused to fix it. Once i contacted trading standards they shifted their asses.

Ah I understand now. Yeah that might be quite effective since somebody did forge my signature and IMHO I believe it was the fedex driver (probably being lazy and not wanting to drag the imac back to his truck).

I also was expecting a $325 pair of speakers delivered today, and called last night to put it on hold. Funny thing is that it still is on the truck for delivery...

Are you allowed to post on these forums? I mean does fedex let you?

Anyways, sorry about that OP. That sucks that it is most likely a neighbor who knows that you live in that apt or something, and they are now enjoying a new 27" iMac. Hope karma swings around.

I'm curious, if someone did falsify the signature, what would be the outcome, as in, who will end up paying for the package? Thanks.

That's some bad news :(

It's got to be the driver - why would a security guard fake your signature and take delivery of it? Seems kind of dumb. Much easier for a drive to so that and say he dropped it off than a guard saying he is you LOL

I don't really talk much with the neighbors; just a hello here and there on passing, so I doubt they know my last name. And the security guard definitely would not know my name since the condo is under the girlfriends name and the imac was under her name as well.

My best bet was that the driver saw a door tag from my other fedex ground shipment and just decided to leave it (wtf?). The door tag was gone as well by the time I got back in town, but I assume there was one since they did attempt a delivery on it.

I will keep update on what happens. I received a e-mail last night from Apple stating that they're working on the trace and I will be updated every 72 hours or so; I'm calling Apple/Fedex daily though so hopefully that will annoy them enough to expedite the resolution.

Well I just waited on the phone for half an hour for a manager at Apple. Manager reviewed my case and said he will try to initiate an advanced replacement. He is looking to make sure they have that spec in stock and will call me back within the hour and hopefully ship it out overnight today. :apple:
