My MacBook Pro 15" 2014 has been running in clamshell mode for several months. I keep the MacBook in a vertical stand with the Apple Logo showing in an upright position. https://www.twelvesouth.com/product/bookarc-for-macbook

The problem with this is that I've ran plenty of pro apps that kept the fans spinning 60%-80% of the time (Xcode/After Effects/Photoshop/etc...)

After several months in clamshell mode, my screen looked like this. I'm guessing the direction of the heat went parallel with the screen (from the bottom up) and caused "burn marks" on the screen. The burn marks on the bottom doesn't seem to be going away.

I recommend not using the Twelve South BookArc (or maybe put the macbook in the orientation where the logo is upside down) for long periods of time.

EDIT:
Just realized I posted in Macbook and not Macbook Pro forums. Oops.

That looks like the wall above my vented fireplace. Ouch.

I'm thinking if the laptop were just sitting normally on the table it'd be fine, since the air would be flowing out the back.

Is it correct to assume that discolouration is below the surface?

I wouldn't blame Twelve South outright. Laptops in general aren't meant for use in that orientation especially for long periods of time. At least since you only seem to use it in clamshell mode the damage really shouldn't matter too much.
