Seen that. Pure craziness. ive seen a few articles saying like "That old ipod classic sitting in your drawer? Its worth hundreds" then i think about my old 3G classic. I get a good laugh from that.

Got a few spare myself I was planning on selling at a profit. It seems the time has come. :D

Awesome

Got two just sitting around home. Time to make some money (or rather... pay off my new iphone 6 plusses).

the latest model is expensive. if you go back a model or two then the prices are reasonable.

I'm absolutely terrified of my Classic getting lost/stolen or breaking. It'd cost more than a PS4 to replace!

Don't lose it or let someone steal it, but replacing a broken iPod Classic is much cheaper. In the UK for example, Apple will replace a broken iPod Classic 160GB for £102.

Just because they are not selling them, doesn't mean they haven't got any. Companies like Apple usually are legally required to be able to repair items for a long time (however, they have the right to replace with a better item, so if they had a 160GB iPod Touch you couldn't refuse that as a repair for an iPod Classic).

As far as the price is concerned that you could get on eBay, I think the number of people willing to buy an iPod Classic for ridiculous prices is very limited.

I feel bad this guy on my local Kijiji. Looks like he has 10 sealed units and hoping to get $800 for each unit...

I have one I've hardly ever used. Original box etc. The only thing is I had my name inscribed on it when I bought it! :D

Who knows maybe it's time to let it go...

Given the going prices for used ones, I'd say so. Of course if Apple were to release an iPod Classic Remix (lightning connector, SSD) the whole market for Classics would tank.

"The time has come". This can mean a number of things:

It can mean that the iPod classic (a design classic) has been discontinued (uncontested fact, this one).

Mind you, it can also mean that it might have been a good idea to have stocked up on iPod classics. Then again, it could also mean that now might be a very good time to consider selling those stocked up iPod classics to people such as me who will always be in the (a?) market for some sort of device along these lines….

Now, I hesitate to have to admit that I haven't an entrepreneurial bone in my body; equally, I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I did have the foresight (and yes, gulp, deep breath, the finances) to stock up on - a few - perhaps, one or two, iPod classics. So, in politics, and in a few minor matters of economics, I do seem to possess a small, perhaps limited, capacity to call, or anticipate, a few things accurately……such as the need to buy an iPod classic (or two) before the manufacturing plug is pulled…….

However, I have no interest in selling them, no aptitude for selling them, and no desire to do so.

This is because I merely wish to use them for myself so that I can listen to music eternally on endless journeys, flights, train trips, and long, solitary nights in faraway places…...

I think :apple: made a huge mistake discontinuing the classic.
They could've doubled the price and hd capacity and made a killing!

My thoughts, also.

Indeed, if they had replaced the old HDD (because HDD failure was a problem with a small, say, around 10% of all iPod classics - two of mine expired while still under warranty on account of this) with a decently sized SSD (128, perhaps 256 GB) they could have easily, in your words, 'make a killing', or, at the very least, a small, but steady profit, to people such as myself.

I actually have one that's sealed BNIB. It's the latest one (160GB, slim, silver). I got it as a Christmas present a few years ago, but i never opened the box because at the time i had a similar one in black.

I plan to sell it on ebay in a few years.
Here's a used one at $5k lol.

Well, I have posted elsewhere that I haven't an entrepreneurial bone in my body, and I haven't.

I love the classic, love its form, love its function, love the idea that I can transport my entire musical library in one neat, elegant, portable device, and I am appalled at the decision to discontinue it. I am one of those who would happily pay serious money for a classic with a 128GB SSD memory, as I love the idea of a a device which will play music and do nothing else; I don't want emails on an iPod when I am travelling - my MBA can handle that.

So, at present I have two classics (80 GB and 160 GB) and one iPod Touch (64GB) which I use. That is, three iPods, and I use them almost every day - every day if I am travelling and abroad.

Now, while I had the foresight to stock up on classics - (I am an historian and analyst and rather good at analysing things), and I have two sealed for the dark, indefinite future, - I have no intention whatsoever of selling them - I bought these things to play music on them, lots and lost of music…..

What killing? Do you think they could have sold 1000 of them with $1,000 profit each? That's a million dollars. That's a few minutes of iPhone sales.

Actually, I genuinely do not think that the relatively paltry profits that the iPod classic would undoubtedly continue to generate are the reason that Apple has decided to terminate the manufacture (and sale) of the device.

Nor do I think Tim Cook's explanations on the matter to be entirely credible.

Rather, I suspect it is because the iPod classic is its own evolutionary dead end in that once a classic has been bought no further revenue is likely to be generated from that buyer unless they download music from iTunes.

In a nutshell, it makes money, just not enough money. As such, it is not a continuous source of revenue, and nor can it be connected to the Cloud as a revenue generator.

I had read an article somewhere (darned if I can find it) that said the REAL reason for the Classic's discontinuation: there are certain parts that it needs, including the hard drive, that are simply no longer made.

That article was up on here on MR.

It was pretty much a catch 22, (people didn't buy them because they were so outdated - Apple didn't upgrade them because there was no demand and people didn't buy them)

Have two 160 GB 2009 classics, one black one in my car, one silver one as my main squeeze. Both have PoweSupport crystal film sets, and the one in my car is in an Apple sock and my everyday one is in a SwitchEasy CapsuleClassic hard plastic case.

Managed to track down a fresh set of the PowerSupport crystal film online so snapped it up for just 8 bucks and threw them on my silver one just now to freshen it up since the films have taken a bit of a beating over five years. Now if only I could find a fresh clear CapsuleClassic it would feel brand new again.

LOVE my classics, not letting either of them go anytime soon whatsoever.

I would love a spare myself....I love my Classic...I NEED something that size to carry around my music collection....my listening mood can change at the drop of a hat and often does! And some of the music I listen to is too important to be smashed down to MP3 or other lossy format so the 160 gigs gives me space to allow that to happen.

My wife has a Classic as well but the hard drive started going on that thing alarmingly soon. (We're talking right when both the warranty and service plan were expired.) I was able to use Disk Utility to hack the iPod into thinking that only, say, the first 145 gigs was usable, but then the disk problem grew. She decided to replace it with an iPod Nano because she didn't need that much space. Well...she grew to hate the Nano for various reasons and wanted to go back and get a Classic -- and when she made that decision is literally the DAY the Classic was discontinued and we weren't able to find any more. :(
