My 1 day old MacBook Pro died.

What must have happened is... the thing refused to sleep when I closed the lid, and when I carried it around its hard drive got destroyed in the meantime. Now it does not boot up nor does OS X setup even successfully read the disk without freezing!

Are you kidding? Also, isn't it supposed to detect abrupt movement and protect itself but locking the head?
 
I have no idea. I figured for a moment "It must be this snazzy new application I just purchased... Path Finder", but that makes no sense. Even then I figured maybe I can try to reinstall OS X and see how it goes, except when I try to choose the installation option, or run Disk Utility through install, it freezes.

The best guess at this point is the disk is somehow fubared. And to this moment I still have no idea what caused the funky sleep/wake behaviour. You close the lid and the screen goes off but you can still hear your IMs chiming as you receive messages.... and when you reopen the lid you can hear sounds when you hit nonsense keys, but the screen is blank.

It is going back. A shame really, kick arse screen this one got.

oh no! I'm so so so sorry to hear that. Are you sure the hard drive is dead? Have you tried booting off the install cd and running disk utility? I'm sure you have, but got to ask...

Tell us what you've done thus far...
 
Better 1 day in than 1 month. At least you know you can walk into the store and demand a replacement. Sucks for the hassle, but seems to be part of the "apple experience" these days :(

Yeap I tried...

There is probably this other thing that I should try too, some diagnostic thing on one of the CDs but I forgot how to run it.

Sadly I cannot do that, since I purchased from the online store and it was BTOed with a harddrive upgrade.

Urgh....

With the disc in hold 'd' instead of 'c' when you start the laptop up.
 
Hmm! After an (indeterminably long period of time) Disk Utility resumed working and showed the drive!

Lemme try to repair permissions and see what happens.

Edit: Yay! It boots up again after disk permissions are fixed.

Great! Hope it stays that way. Could it be that it simply overheated? I had that happen last year with a macbook and it shut down and didn't start up right away again. Eventually it booted without a problem.

Unlike the powerbooks, the MBPs are not quite as fast to sleep because they save the state in ram (I think) before sleep. After what happened with the macbook I always wait for the light to start pulsating before I put it in my bag and have had no problems.

Are you happy with it otherwise?

So far so good, fixing the disk permissions seem to make it a lot less cranky :)

Hope it stays this way, I would not want to trade this one for another machine if I can help it!
 
What's the HDD manufacture on your new SR MBP? I had similar experience with one of my previous Napa C2D MBP when it was first launched. It had Fujitsu HDD, then I exchanged with Apple store with another unit that came with Hitachi drive, and running very well since.

Hey, I was having some problems the other day (not similar) but also related to hard drive: my computer was running EXTREMELY slow, most likely because of messed up disk permissions or something or other related. Repairing the disk fixed my problem, which I think I caused by carrying my MBP around roughly while it was running a movie.

Maybe I'm wrong though and it just needed a reboot

My guess is not shutting down does ruin disk permissions over time.

One thing that irks me is it does takes a while to sleep. You can close the lid and count literally seconds before the latch release LED assumes the "breathing" pattern.

I thought the hitachi drives are standard now in the SR MBP? Can someone please confirm this :)
