Noticed that on Daring Fireball there was a pretty big oversight on one of the pics that was actually being complimentary about the neural engine and how it improved depth of field effect. Isn't the area that I circled being completely missed by portrait mode? It is blurred out at bottom of ear, but above ear it is in focus. Seems like a big miss to me, but interested in your thoughts.

This is the type of thing you just send directly to apple before thread. That way they can put it into their ML machine and help it along.

guys, this is a new camera and this review is gushing over how great it is and completely overlooked a major fail in the portrait mode. This is just as bad as anything I've seen on the current gen portrait mode. I was just pointing it out, which is what these threads are for. Thought it might break up the monotany of flight tracking and provide something else for you to chew on.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s a cornerbead that has a dent on the real wall? Just maybe.

I agree with you, total reviewer fail. Not sure how he didn't notice that, and even went on to feature that as a highlight. Also suspect that it took him so long to realize the camera sensor is physically larger this year. Camera basics 101.

Of all the things to find fault with..

The camera? Yeah, just a minor feature of the phone.

Except that same vertical feature is blurred under his earlobe and is the same distance behind him so it should be blurred consistently.

Thank you!

It certainly looks like an issue. I think most people simply disagree with it being a "major fail", to use your words. Is this a frequent problem? If so it could be a major problem that they'll address. Or it could be 1 bad photo out of thousands of good ones. We don't really know as very few people have had time to play with them. Time will tell. In my opinion, a single photo doesn't seem like much to get worked up over at this point.

Sure, it's a miss without a doubt. I hope an isolated one but it was a great find Sherlock haha

it feels like you are fault finding here. daring fireball is impressed with how the A12 can identify hairs and blur them out. if all the photos are consistently so, then it's great, it highlights the potential the A12 could have. Portrait mode has always been a hit and miss in all phones, BUT this will improve over time with machine learning. What is important is A12 has this huge capacity for improvement and it's local in your iPhone, not in the cloud like google, or absence in other phones.

I haven’t had much success with portrait mode on either my Note 8 or my X. There’s always something they glitch. I’ll look at a photo and think - fantastic! Then I’ll look closer and see a patch of non blurred pixels near a neck or an ear or something and smack my head. I missed the ability to dial up or down the effect that the Note had. My X is all or nothing so I’m glad that the XS phones have that too.

This has been a problem since I got my iPhone 7 Plus. It sure is taking Apple a long time to get this portrait mode perfected.
