Can someone please explain what this option does in the wallpaper menu in settings? I currently have it disabled.

I enabled it but noticed no difference whatsoever.

What does it do and when is it supposed to work?

Thanks

It’s more noticeable with Apple’s own wallpapers than third-party ones. See attached photos.

I understand the the wallpaper changes to a darker one once you change from light mode to dark mode. But i dont understand what difference the setting i inquired about does.

You’ve lost me.

When you change from light mode to dark mode, the apple wallpapers change as you have mentioned in your first post. That happens whether the option i mentioned is enabled or disabled.

"Dark Appearance Dims Wallpaper" is a an option in wallpaper settings.

In iPad OS 13.1b4, toggling the option visibly dims the wallpapers shown in the preview for me... returning to the home screen matches that dimness/brightness.

Note that it says it will dim your wallpaper depending on your ambient light. Are you trying this out in a well lit environment?

I understand what you are saying. My question is, isn't the wallpaper dimming anyways if you have auto-brightness on?

Auto brightness controls the overall brightness of the display whereas the wallpaper-specific dimming for dark mode just dims the wallpaper when switching to dark mode.

I don't have any settings for auto brightness, on either of my ipads. OK, I do, it's an accessibility setting now. This setting is limited to the home screen, but the effect is pretty stark.

I use a plain white wallpaper. When I enable that setting, it turns the wallpaper to a medium gray.

The setting notes that this is dependable on ambient light. So it shouldn't be medium gray in all lighting conditions.

I guess that just means that there are 2 states: Dimmed and not dimmed. Any further more granular brightness adjustments are done by the auto brightness settings I guess (which affects the overall brightness).

Couldn't tell you, I don't use auto brightness. With auto brightness turned off, it's gray all the time.

What I can tell you though, is auto brightness doesn't turn my white screen gray, it turns it, well, dim white.

In any regard I turned it off never to be turned on again because I don't want my white wallpaper to be gray.

I understand how this setting works i just don't understand how ambient light affects this option. It's either dimmed or not. Thanks for the replies guys.
