A friend of mine sent me this:

You are the only one I know who knows what they are
talking about with digital cameras - so hopefully you
can answer this: Do they wear out? The Kodak 5MP one
I have, about 2 1/2 years old and over 3000 pics
already, no longer takes good photos in average
lighting situations. Indoors, it doesn't matter how
many lights are on, the photo will come out dark, as
if you are only using the flash. The flash still
works, and the battery is fresh.

Any ideas on what I can tell him?

exposure compensation?

I'll bet he has the exposure compensation setting set all the way to "dark", like -2 maybe.

Perhaps you can tell him to find the "return to factory defaults" menue pick.

If nothing else ask him to try a +2 setting and see what happens

Yes they do wear out but 2 or 3 thousand exposures is still not very many. I bet the shutter will last 10X that long.
