I'd hardly call it dark mode and anyway who stares at their wallpaper? I have windows open on 5 desktops and one full screen app. I haven't seen my desktop since ... eh .... I don't know all I do is swipe left and right switching between stuff.
That's why many translucent elements of Yosemite incorporate the colours of the desktop wallpaper. That's a pretty smart way to make wallpapers more important for personalisation, IMO. You still percieve the overall tone of the wallpaper even if its completely occluded.
Dark Mode IS cool. What's not cool is that half of my apps have black icons so i can't see them in the menu bar, LOL.
Easy to knock out some inverted versions for ya - which apps?

Don't install the menu bar hack, but check the icons to see if the ones you need are there. Good luck!
