Not sure if this is where I put this. Does anyone else notice that apples WWDC app and invite are both darker in color. Anyone else think dark mode will come with iOS 10.

I think they have no choice really if they plan on moving to OLED screens in the future. They will offer the mode in iOS 10 and make it the default by iOS 11 when the new hardware comes out. This will give everyone a chance to adapt, then making it the default. If people want to go back then they can but it will impact battery life negativley.

I have a feeling one of the things they are going to be doing with this dark mode is everything will be black and white including the home screens. Then any apps that have notifications or other relevant updating info will turn to color and pop out more on the screen compared to all the other home screen icons or possibly widgets. I think that would look pretty good if done correctly.

I agree with Shockwave. Eventually they would have to make the switch to get the most out of the technology. iOS 10 would give them the opportunity to introduce APIs that developers can use and by the time an OLED iPhone is introduced, the switch will have been made.

I don’t think that the WWDC is to be understood as a hint though. Blue grey is not really beneficial to OLED displays, it is actually the worst choice you could make. Grey means that all diodes are still emitting light and consuming energy, whereas pure black would do neither. Blue diodes deteriorate the quickest and lose their vibrancy much earlier.

Not to substantiate rumors, but we've all heard that Apple Music will get a black/white revamp in iOS 10.
And ever since Tim took over, the rumors have been quite to point. So I guess yeah, we'll see a general trend towards a darker UI.

Would I like a dark mode? Yes. Do I think we are going to get a system wide dark mode? No.

Now, if we had an OLED display, I would say more likely. Battery drain with darker colors on OLED is less. Battery drain with lighter colors on IPS is less. So until the display changes from IPS to OLED, I don't think there will be a dark mode.

Battery drain isn't affected on an IPS panel (much) irrespective of the colors in question. I say much because in this setup the backlight is always active, and you need a marginal amount of additional power (~.4%) to strain the crystals to block the backlight.
So whether we get a dark mode or not really doesn't depend on the screen technology.

But as everyone here has said, there's a 100% decrease in OLED panels that use pure black.
So it would benefit future tech, and not particularly affect the current.
Case in point: iOS1-3 had a solid black background in SpringBoard and they would've done everything they could to reduce power consumption then.
