Hey everyone!

Yesterday I started noticing a pretty big dark vertical blotch along the right side of my new secondhand iMac, anyone know what it is? If its screen damage, what might have caused it?

I don't recall seeing something like this when I got the mac a month ago, but it's also possible I just did not notice.

The blotch is more visible when darker colors are displayed, its nearly invisible on white and lighter colors.

I also took out the front glass panel yesterday to see if it was trapped condensation or a smudge on the pane, it is not. The glass was clean, and I ran the iMac without the glass on and the smudge was still visible.

I have this on a 2009 iMac. I'm pretty sure that it was caused by using it in a humid environment with water condensing on the inside of the screen and then bringing down ust or dirt on the screen so that it wasn't uniform. It's not as noticeable on mine as it is on yours, particularly when monitor brightness is high.

I believe it is dust trapped between the various laminates that compose the LCD panel.
do you think it is possible to open up the panel and clean it myself? or better to just accept its not getting out

Yes! I was thinking humidity too as I live in a basement, unfortunately running a dehumidifer in the room didn't really do much

It probably is on the inside of the glass.

You can take the glass off of your iMac, and clean it.

If you have zero experience in working inside an LCD panel, then you'd better accept it. You can look around in your neighborhood market, a broken iMac 2010 with working LCD panel may not cost a fortune, and you can just buy it to salvage the LCD panel.... Replacing the whole LCD panel is far more easier than opening it up and messing with things inside.

Damn that's what I was fearing, thank you! I will keep an eye out on facebook marketplace and the like :)
