It is worth every penny, imo. I've dump several hours into so far. The stress mechanic took a little bit to get used to but it adds a different dynamic to the gameplay.

looks like an ipad game. I think 20 is a bit much for this game.
We spend $20 on a 2 hour movie and think nothing of it. I think $20 for dozens of hours of entertainment (fear) is well worth it. I've already put a dozen hours into it and about as many heroes in the ground.

Yup, it looks as thbough it will be a bit of fun, but I also will be waiting for a final release also, not going to get involved in anymore early release, pre release games.

I tend to say away from them because I don't want a buggy, half finished game ruining my fun. The earliest I'm willing to jump in on something is a late beta.

Oh, and here's 20 minutes of gameplay.

I really like the narrator. It's a nice touch.

I've put nearly 30 hours into this since it came out. There are no bugs that I know of, and I've experienced a total of 3 crashes to desktop. Since the game autosaves constantly, this was no issue.

HIGHLY recommended for an early access game.

It's still not completely finished, though. They're still adding classes, and I don't think they've allowed access to the eponymous Darkest Dungeon yet.

One of the major reasons why I avoid these betas is because I'm afraid I'll get burnt out before the game is actually done. If I were to get it now, I'd probably do what you do, and play it nonstop. Then, when it's finally out, everything's finished, tweaked, and ready to roll, I'll be all like..."eh, I'll get around to it again one day". I think it's better to wait.

I'm doing the same thing with Darkwood, too. And I really, really want to play that game.

Bought it last night. Put in 2 hours in first sitting.

So far a good game.

3/5 dungeons are available. I don't know about adding character classes, but I know they are adding more things to the classes such as class-specific traits which don't exist yet.

The burn-out thing is a factor. I got burned out on Divinity Original Sin by playing 100 hours of the beta in Cyseal before the game was out. Anyway I'm still having a blast with it as there is an ever growing sense of progression. There's also self discipline. I don't mind acquiring a game, and not playing it to death either. Just play it a reasonable amount of time, then revisit it later when its updated or fully released.

Whenever I read rogue-like I immediately lose all interest. That's just my personal preference of course but for me such games are not fun. This looks like it would be cool were it not for that feature.

That's the problem. :p

Roguelikes are more a vague checklist than they are a specific genre. Basically it's "everything is randomized, and you die a lot", which can cover everything from action games to oldschool RPGs.

I wouldn't dismiss it just because of that. Unless, of course, you hate randomized everything and dying a lot.

Randomized is fine. Dying a lot not so much other than in MP shooters.

The thing rogue-like implies to me is you die and it is game over. You must begin again in hopes of getting further next time. That is was rogue was so I expect a rogue-like more than anything else to mimic this gameplay and that is what for me is the suckage. That said, I appreciate that some enjoy that. It's just not my cup of tea.

Yeah, I understand. Roguelikes are pretty high on the frustration factor. Personally, I kinda like it. I think the tension that comes from threat of imminent death and only your skill and understanding (and sometimes luck) being the only thing that can save you makes for a much more interesting experience.

But with that said, I can easily see why some people wouldn't enjoy it quite as much as I do. Roguelikes take a lot more patience than usual, and are great for pissing people off. They tend to go a bit beyond being merely challenging. Some of the worst ones can be kinda punishing at times.

2 crusaders, 1 vestal, 1 bounty hunter = I'm unstoppable.

Long Veteran dungeons without using a single camp: the crusaders can reduce fear while the bounty hunter stun locks the last enemy, all the while the vestal is healing everyone... very fun game.

My level 5 party consists of 1 hellion, 1 crusader, 1 highwayman and 1 vestal. Usually works out quite well. I have a variety of level 4 people though with every class to mix and match as I like.

Very nice... just got a couple to level 5. How do you keep the fear in check?

By "fear" do you mean stress? If so, the answer is critical hits! I never bring torches, even on low level runs. Well I bring 1 or 2 sometimes, but that's just for using on scrolls to remove quirks. Otherwise on medium/long runs you can also use stress reducing skills at camp if needed.

If you want here's a vid I put up yesterday of me doing a short champion run.
