Darn stripped screws!!!!

Ok.... So I'm trying to add some RAM to my friends iBook. I've loosened and tightened the screws on the RAM sheild on MY ibook COUNTLESS times with a #0 phillips screwdriver (the one suggested by Apple for this particular operation).

Let me re-emphasize the "COUNTLESS times" part.

Ok.

So I try to take off the RAM sheild in her (Dual USB) Ibook and one of the two screws loosens like a charm. The other won't budge no matter what I try!!! I don't want to risk stripping the hell out of the screw, and I don't want her to pay 40 bucks to have someone install the chip. Is there any handy-dandy, super secret, ancient family tradition, sacred herb, spiritual dance, end all fix for a stuck or stripped screw???

Have you taken it to an Applecare facility?

I think there was a TV ad once for a special screwdriver to remove stripped screws, but I forget where. If you do get it out, make sure you get a replacement screw.
 
wow we have the same problem!!!
the apple store genius guy said AppleCare doesn't do stripped screws, so the best thing to do was to go to Mac Enthusiasts (in Los Angeles, though) since they do this stuff. So i'm trying to make some time to go there and get it removed.
All you should do is search for an Apple Authorized Service Provider/Specialist in your area. If you do it yourself, you might damage some stuff, so why not let someone else do the dirty work for you :p

edit: woah...you live in LA too :p...Mac Enthusiasts is on Pico, near the Westside Pavilion i think. Haven't been there after they moved a month ago, so I'm not sure about the exact location :p

Sounds to me like you're asking now so that you DON'T strip them not that they've already been stripped.

I have had the same issue with my iBook, my bf's iBook, my Mom's, my sister's get the picture? I'll bet it's the one closest to the front of the unit too huh?

I use the #0 and just press down REAL hard and twist gently but firmly and that usually gets it to budge.

YES!!! Thats the one! I'll try again... But I'm scared I'll crack the MoBo!

And Ubergeek..... I think I know where you're talking about. I live about 20 minutes from there. What part of LA are you in?

Umm disclosure...don't let the Hulk or the Thing do it...they might crack the MoBo...if you push that hard...you pushed too hard lol :)

The same thing happened to me on my iBook when I was replacing my harddrive. It happened to the weird shaped screws on the underneath of the iBook. I put a screw driver in there, then hit it very hard so it molded into the screw, then I took it out. but once you get it out, go to the hadware store and get a new one. make sure to not put the old one back in
 
-Just occured to me:

This thread is one of the rare instances when one can say "Strip" and "Screw" in the same sentence, and noone will get offended.
 
Hm, I've once used a hammer and chisel to get red of a stripped screw an my carburetor... don't know if I'd try it on my 'book though ;)
